Bernstein at his mesmerizing, dynamic best in Russian music,
By Santa Fe Listener (Santa Fe, NM USA) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: Prokofiev: Symphonies 1 & 5 (Royal Edition, No. 64) (Audio CD)
Only Karajan excelled Bernstein in his ability to master the entire orchestral repertoire, but arguably Bernstien could speak more languages, msucially speaking. He had an amzing gift for taking in national styles and making them his own (his Nielsen, for example, was a revelation to the Danes, as his Shostakivich was to the composer himself.) This is Lenny in Russia, and the fire, wit, grace, and passion he brings to Prokofiev is matchless.
