For me, this is the definitive recording of Prokofiev's 5th. A few reasons are at the core of my opinion: this recording was issued in 1984 when I was in high school, and I happened to meet the Principal Clarinet from the SLSO at a seminar a few years after the release. He urged me to pick up this recording because he thought it was one of the best the SLSO had made.

I went right out and bought an LP of the recording.

He was right - it is a tremendous recording. The pacing is excellent, the sound quality is superb, and the individual (and group) performances shine.

To this day I measure any and all Prokofiev 5 performances by this recording. It's been with me a long time and I highly recommend it.
