This review is from: Prokofiev: Symphony No. 6, Op. 111; Waltzes, Op. 110 (Audio CD)
This CD offers performances of Prokofiev 6 and the Waltzes that are well played and recorded and are very competitive. I've never cared for the Jarvi P6, mainly because the Chandos recording is lacking in low end - so essential in Prokofiev - and because the SNO does not have the right sound for this music. My favorite is Previn/LA Phil but this Naxos CD worth while. The old Ormandy is also very good but is out of print, and Sony in their lack of wisdom hasn't issued it - I have a bootleg copy. Slatkin is also pretty good if a bit bland.

I don't know if people are familiar with the Waltzes, but they are very interesting. A little different than Strauss! It helps to have the pocket score to follow along. I picked up the score in Moscow, otherwise I probably would never have heard of the waltzes. They're good. Anyone who likes 20th century Russian music will like them.

Magnificent recordings of sublime music. You will want to add this disc to your collection. I will confess that I have not heard the Neeme Jarvie disk, which I'm sure is fine, but this is a rich, lustrous rendering played with intelligence and passion. At this price, it's is an absolute steal.

I have listened to both the Jarvi and this performance, and I would not call this performance poor at all. I in fact like the mixing better with the large hall sound. For the price, you can't go wrong.

This all-too-seldom heard symphony was a pleasure to find on CD, and the Ukrainians got it just right, with feeling and enthusiasm, on a technically well-made disc.

Read my review of Jarvi's set/complete set to get my opinion.Kuchar, highly recommended in all Prokofiev/syms/orchestral. Kuchar, the finest set of Prokofiev syms Compared to the fine Muti/Philadelphia's 3,5 and Rozh's set with the USSR/Consonance.

This is really a poor perfromance. You could do so much better with Jarvi and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra on Chandos.
