After looking at some videos and reading about this creature, I figured it was worth a shot as I was in need of a diffuser. It is not the prettiest thing as the pics here are good representation. It seems a little flimsy though I have had no problems velcroing to the camera case strap and lugging around.
I am not a pro and do not play one on TV - but I was well pleased with this. It might be that I had decent expectations, but I was happy with the 400 shots I took of a bride-to-be. Look over the videos that are out there, consider the price of this (not too much more than a decent diffuser) and give it a shot.

I have been using a Gary Fong dome flash diffuser for two years. That device works great if there is a ceiling nearby for reflecting down a big chunk of the light energy going upwards. With the Whale Tail there is far less a need for a low ceiling for getting good results. The flash photos are soft with no harsh shadows and the device works well in tall or no ceiling environments. The attachment to my Nikon flash is clumsy at best. I improvised a better fit by using electric tape and additional rubber bands for a better grip between the flash unit and the diffuser. There was no instruction in my box on how to use, so just put it on and start shooting. Well worth the investment, I just wish it was a little better made!
