5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
It's big. Almost big enough I gave it a 4 star review, but it works so well I couldn't subtract any points from this. I have an i7-920 on an Intel DX58SO motherboard, and I've got tall Corsair Dominator memory sticks. Because of the tall heatsinks on the Corsair RAM, I had to orient the heatsink in the non-classic direction. (It's blowing air from my video card down...

I did not look for the ** thinking it was just some funny terminology for the socket. Turns out, buried in something called a description way at the bottom of the page was a statement that more hardware was needed to mount to an AM3 motherboard but it did not say what was needed. The seller does not appear to have this hardware. There was no "People who bought this also bought AM2 adapter kit".

I did eventually find the hardware at another vendor by Googling "Prolimatech AM2 Retention Mount Adapter Kit"

This is not to say the cooler is bad, just misleading copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, February 18, 2010

I have an i7-920 on an Intel DX58SO motherboard, and I've got tall Corsair Dominator memory sticks. Because of the tall heatsinks on the Corsair RAM, I had to orient the heatsink in the non-classic direction. (It's blowing air from my video card down towards my power supply, as opposed to blowing from front of case towards back of case.) It didn't seem to affect performance. My idle temps dropped from 50C to 36C (122F to 97F). My fully loaded temps dropped from 77C to 60C (171F to 140F). Highly recommended unless you have a little case or its too packed in there.

I did extensive research on CPU coolers January 2010 for my new i7 rig I was building. [...] showed that the Megahalems outperformed all other air coolers on the market at that time. I was fully unprepared for the size of this cooler. MAKE CERTAIN THAT YOU MEASURE THE HEIGHT AVAILABLE IN YOUR CASE! Clearance is an issue but it worked fine in my full ATX case. Also make sure you buy accompanying fans of the correct size. The reason i'm writing this is because the otherwise flawless workmanship had one catch. No other reviews brought this to my attention, so it must not be common. There is a cross-member that physically holds the cooling tower to the motherboard backing plate, that two spring loaded screws go through. The holes in the plate were not drilled all the way through. I highly recommend this cooler, but if you buy it, do a dry fit test first. if your thumb screws do not move freely just use a hand drill and take the step out of the holes so the springs engage the cross-member.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, February 16, 2010

This was a breeze to install (15-20 mins) and works wonderfully (reducing temps by more than 30oC over Intel i7-920 stock cooler)! I read many of the reviews on Newegg and elsewhere about how tricky this was to install, how drilling new holes would be necessary, removal of the mobo ould be required even with the CoolerMax HAF922 case that I'm using, and how tight the install would be limiting access to memory,no 2nd pair of fan clips, etc, etc. Despite thse warnings, I bought the Megahalem because of the excellent reviews it has gotten once properly installed.

My problem was that the stock cooler wasn't nearly good enough even for modest overclocking under high load. The HAF922 case has the nice feature that it provides access to the backside of the mobo near the chip -- it was easy to remove the stock cooler, clean up the thermal compound and proceed with mounting the Megahalem. Just follow the well-diagrammed directions carefully. Of course, I took the precautionary step before purchase of comparing the dimensions of the mobo the mechanical drawing of the Megahalem provided by Prolima on their website, so I could check clearances. No installations issues or problems, just a bit of care to mount the 'strip adapters' in the right direction so that the mounting plate fit. In fact the hardest part of the install, was attaching the 2 pairs (yes, 2 pairs are provided not 1) of fan mounting clips and fans. Bottom line is that my i7-920 is now running at least 30oC cooler than before and all fits well even in the mid-tower.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Cool for Air Cooled Heatsink, January 16, 2012

This review is from: Prolimatech Megahalems Rev B. Intel CPU Heatsink (LGA 775 / 1156 / 1366) (AM2** / AM2+** / AM3**) (Personal Computers)
Highly recommend this if you're not budgeted for a water-cooled loop system. It's huge but you get huge results. Heck, I thought 28/31 degrees was off after coming down from a 40 degree system. It's enclosed a SilverStone Raven RV01 case so that too helps along with a push/pull get up. Average gtx 260 video card and a classy3 with 12gb of Corsair 1866's. With the pk1 gel it just needs a pea size in the middle of your cpu and place this beast on there. The size and weight of this will spread it evenly. Unless, you don't know where the middle of your cpu is. Also, be on the look out for the Black Edition of this some time soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heatsink Review, February 7, 2011

Great product! I had no trouble with clearance inside my computer case (Silverstone SST-FT02B Fortress Series) or with my motherboard (Gigabyte X58A-UD3R) or CPU (Intel i7-950). I also used one AFC1212D-PWM, Delta's AFC1212D Fan 3400 RPM, with the heat-sink as well. The heat-sink and fan fit perfectly together as there are grooves cut out for fans on both sides. Do note this heat-sink is very large and slightly bulky. Overall excellent cooling.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just Follow the Directions, October 14, 2010

This review is from: Prolimatech Megahalems Rev B. Intel CPU Heatsink (LGA 775 / 1156 / 1366) (AM2** / AM2+** / AM3**) (Personal Computers)
I was hoping to get my i7 930 2.8GHz stable at 4+GHz under full load overnight with temps staying under 70 c but settled for 3.3GHz at 60 c full load.
I did not do as the directions said. I did not apply the thermal paste to both the processor surface and the heatsink base. I wish I had. I may pull it, remove the paste, buy the arctic silver paste and try that. I did the one centered dot method on the processor and a little tiny spec on the heatsink. I should have evenly applied the paste to both surfaces as per the instructions. This was my first build and my only regret so overall I'm very happy.
I did the fans in a push-pull config. My case is set up to push air out the back and pull in from the front so it's pulling the heat off the 12Gb of Dominator RAM that's right next to it, and I mean RIGHT next to it. One of the fans is pushed out 1/8th of an inch because it is resting on the RAM heatsink.
The product arrived on time, had all the parts, the instructions were easy to understand, and it functions properly. I bet it will function even better after I reapply the thermal paste.
If I find myself having to SLI another Quadro FX 4000 I suspect I'll have to go with a liquid type cooling system but for now this is sufficient.

I bought this slightly used (was like new essentially) and it works great. My i7-930 is overclocked to 3.78 GHz with Hyper-threading AND turbo-boost on (up to 3.96 GHz) running prime95 for 24 hours stable and max temp was 78 degrees C. Very pleased.

This heatsink is awesome. Is really easy to install, but you motherboard have to be unmounted for it to be installed. I put 2 2000rpm fans on it and the temps are very low now.

I have my Core i7 920 @ 3.5GHz and is very cool and stable. This is for sure the best air cooler in the market!

I purchased the Megahalems (B)to cool my new i7-920 on an EVGA X58 SLI motherboard. I'm using two Scythe SY1225SL12M 120mm "Slipstream" Case Fan in push/pull setup. The system runs cool, as advertised. The only problem has been mounting the two fans on the Megahalems once the Megahalems is mounted on the motherboard. The core on the right and the heat-spreader on the left make it impossible to fit the large 120mm fans entirely on the Megahalems, as both fans ride over the top of the large heat sink tower. Other than making mounting a bit tricky, this seems to pose no problem. It certainly doesn't affect cooling much. One feature i particularly like its the two-pin alignment to the heat sink's base. This allows the heat sink to fit tight without wobble, something I always found wrong with the Thermalright Ultima 90 I used in a previous build.
