5.0 out of 5 stars A satisfying read indeed!, April 4, 2007

I bought this book on a whim having not heard or seen anything about it before coming across it in my local bookstore. Is there anything better than buying a book on impulse and finding that it was exactly what you were looking for? I think not! For fans of either Veronica Mars or Buffy this is a must read. The author does a fantastic job of creating a complete world rich with details and characters who feel real even when faced with surreal situations. This is one of those books where when you get to the end, you turn the page anyway hoping for more. After finishing my first thought was that I wanted more time with these characters. After doing a little sleuthing of my own online I am happy and relieved to know that I will get my way as the follow up book is already finished and looks to be in stores sometime next year. If you are on the fence about this one, I really recommend you pick it up, you will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Read!, March 30, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I'm not a book reviewer, but I know what I love--and this book fits that bill. The characters are so well-crafted that they jump off the page, the storyline is fresh and exciting. I read slowly to make sure I didn't miss any of the author's wry humor--and to make the book last and last. This is a wonderful read that will delight adults and teens alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for any age, April 3, 2007
What a great book. The story has been described as a cross between Buffy and Veronica Mars. Having never seen either, I can't compare, but it is a tale about a high school senior who, to her great reluctance, is forced to attend her senior prom to stop a demon. Maggie Quinn, resident demon hunter, is smart, sassy and sarcastic and is supported by a cast of friends and family that are as well defined as she is. The plot is full of both laughs and suspense, keeping the reader eagerly engaged until the climatic prom night when Maggie and her stud muffin sidekick ( think Noah Wyle in The Librarian--at least I did ) face the demon at the prom.

This book is marketed to teens, but can be enjoyed by any age. A great read.

I can't wait for the sequel!

5.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too, March 14, 2007
Maggie Quinn is just weeks from graduating and getting away from Avalon High. But as the end of her high school years gets closer, Maggie gets warped into the wrath that is Prom. This only happens because Maggie had to protect the school outcast, Stanley, who was being picked on by the prime jocks and their girlfriends, the Jessicas. Maggie stops this by taking photos of the action, since she is the yearbook photographer, and threatens to use the hideous pictures against them. Maggie believes that she has done the right thing--that is, until Stanley starts yelling at her for helping him out and threatens to make them all pay.

Maggie ignores the threat, that is until she begins to have nightmares, which may seem ordinary, but for Maggie they only predict the future. Soon enough strange things begin to happen at school, all toward the six-pack of Jessicas and an unexpected student. The school's hottie even begins to notice Maggie.

Now Maggie has to put on her girl-sleuth outfit and figure out just what exactly is happening, along with Justin, the student that goes to the college that her father works at (if only he wasn't so cute). Let's just hope that Maggie can actually figure this out before things become permanent forever.

PROM DATES FROM HELL is definitely different, but in a very good way. Rosemary Clement-Moore takes on the Prom like never before. Even though everything may seem weird throughout the story, the ending actually makes it all seem so ordinary. And the relationship that blossoms between Maggie and a certain someone gives the book a little something extra.

Readers will not be disappointed with this great read, and some might even think about the consequences when someone bullies another.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buffy is a thing of the past., April 6, 2007

I was very surpirsed at how good this book turned out to be. Most teen lit books I read are very well targeted toward the teen audience, but this was not. It can be enjoyed by readers of all ages!

I also loved the main character Maggie. She's someone I would have been friends with back in highschool and someone who I could relate to. It was very well written and is a great mixture of mystery and the supernatural. I really hope for a sequel because Maggie was such a likeable character.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book, with satisfying twist at the end!, September 27, 2009
This review is from: Prom Dates from Hell (Maggie Quinn: Girl vs Evil, Book 1) (Paperback)
I've just finished reading this first Maggie Quinn book and have already passed it on to my teenage niece with instructions to read and share with her friends. :) It's a wonderful read, being a nice balance between everyday-teenage life and a bit of the supernatural. The characters are interesting, Maggie is a delight, and if the Jocks and Jessicas are a bit one-dimensional, with the exception of Brian, well - it's high school and most teenagers do seem to be mono-focused!

I really enjoyed the way the book ended in regards to Lisa. That was unexpected and rather out of keeping with the way things generally happen. Not only did I have the nice sensation of completing a well-written book that was thoroughly enjoyable, but also that lovely glow of being happily surprised and completely in agreement with the outcome.

Now, as soon as I get the second book in the series, I can keep reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars Demons and High School and Hotties, Oh My!, June 23, 2009

I LOVE MAGGIE QUINN! I have from the first moment I met her in this witty, action-packed book.

Smart, sassy and not afraid to be herself, Maggie Quinn has no interest in fitting in with her high school's social elite (whom she refers to, not so fondly, as 'the Jocks and the Jessicas'). And she certainly has no desire to attend that annual night of over-the-top angst known as prom. In fact, all she wants to do is finish her senior year of high school with a minimum of fuss and head off to college.

Her priorities are rudely reordered when a dangerous otherworldly entity starts stalking Maggies dreams, awakening her own particular form of 'the Sight' that the female Quinns have possessed for generations. Even more disturbing, it seems that the being from Maggie's dreams is behind a series of increasingly frightening misfortunes befalling the top members of her high school's pecking order.

With both her inner vision and her outer Nancy Drew on full alert, Maggie enlists the aid of Justin MacCallum, a hottie college student with a strong interest in all things paranormal. She's determined to get to the bottom of the strange goings-on and stop capital-E-Evil in its tracks before the Jocks and the Jessicas are completely wiped out (even if they totally deserve it).

Laugh-out loud funny, sweet and incredibly well-written, Prom Dates From Hell is a blast from start to finish. The only reason you'll want to put it down is so that you can pick up Maggie's next adventure, Hell Week.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Storytelling!, June 11, 2009
This review is from: Prom Dates from Hell (Maggie Quinn: Girl vs Evil, Book 1) (Paperback)
This first book in the series is just great!!! Tight, clean, very well written. The story is absorbing, the characters convincing, the dialog terrific and the action appropriate. This is good writing, writing that pulls the reader in and when it's done, it's done too soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prom dates from hell rocks!, June 18, 2008
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Prom Dates from Hell (Maggie Quinn: Girl vs Evil, Book 1) (Paperback)
Maggie Quinn has no plans on going to the prom, a girl with her grandmother's sixth sense, but after a demon starts attacking other students she has no choice. The story is addicting and hilarious. It reminds me a lot of (my personal favorite show)BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER.
I hated putting the book down and fell in love with Maggie and the rest of the cast.

Despite the title this book isn't very explicit. Perfect for teens of all ages who enjoy a good demon slaying or just a funny new read!

It is a VERY promising new series Hell Week (Maggie Quinn: Girl vs Evil)

4.0 out of 5 stars Buffy meets Nancy Drew, November 27, 2007
Have you ever heard the cliche that High School can be hell? Well, imagine for a moment that it really is. Not in the figurative sense but literally hell. That's what happens in the book, PROM DATES FROM HELL. Maggie Quinn is on the newspaper staff and is the Yearbook photographer and doesn't want to go to her prom. One day while photographing the Spanish club for the Yearbook, Stanley, the school nerd, asks her out. She's horrified but what happens next is even worse. The resident Jocks and Jennifers come along at that moment and torment Stanley. After Maggie takes a photo and threatens to put it in the newspaper, something happens. Stanley threatens all of them. No one takes him seriously, that is until Maggie starts sensing things and smelling brimstone at the school.

Later things start happening to the in crowd--the same ones who'd tormented Stanley. Now it's up to Maggie to find out what's going on. Putting on her Nancy Drew hat she searches to see what's going on and finds out that the prom is mandatory if she hopes to save the school from demons.

I enjoyed this tale. Think Buffy meets Nancy Drew. The catchy dialog pulled me right into the story. Throw in a cute college student, who happens to be researching paranormal happenings and is in her father's college class, a cute Jock, and a foggy demon, who likes to leave messages on her window. Oh, and also some witchy cheerleaders.

What I really enjoyed about this tale was the interaction of Maggie to her father. So often stories have the parents either obvious to their teen or the bad one. Maggie's father is very supportive of his daughter even when he can't see the demon. And her Debbie Reynolds like Grandmother is a gem.

This is a fun ride that makes you wonder if maybe that smell in high school might be something more sinister!
