Great Cast - But Target Audience is Confusing,
By
This review is from: Prom Wars (DVD)
Prom Wars is a decent teen-themed movie, although the target audience is hard to figure out. On one hand, it's a very light-hearted film that seems to cater to tween Nickelodeon fans. On the other hand, it's a rated-R film with occasional swearing and a few mild sexual references. So while it's not as explicit as American Pie, it's unusually R-rated when it very easily could have been PG-13 without the swearing. Quick note to parents: there's no nudity, just a couple scenes of actors and actresses in their undies.
The senior class of an all-girls private school challenges two boys school rivals to compete with one another, the winner earning the right to take the girls to prom. Unfortunately the writing isn't that funny, even for a bubbly teen film. What makes Prom Wars watchable is that it has a solid cast of college-aged actors, all with a good deal of TV and film experience. The most interesting casting is the talented and gorgeous Alia Shawkat, who did a great job in "Bart Got a Room" and "Amreeka." Other notables include the lovely Keenan MacWilliam of "Saddle Club" fame, and hip Ricky Ullman. Most of the experienced supporting cast are Canadian, which reflects the Montréal shooting location. The movie was shot well, has a decent production value, and a catchy pop-rock soundtrack. My only real complaint is that there weren't enough funny scenes that stood out. Since the film earned an R-rating for language, they should have gone all-out like American Pie or Superbad. Instead the film keeps things very light, but with few laugh-out-loud moments. The movie is still worth checking out, watch it once before you decide whether to buy the DVD.
