Book Description

Book 1 in a series of 6

A search for a homeland in a world darkened by war…

Dov Zalinski has nothing left in the ruins of World War 2—only the promise his mother made when she left him at a Warsaw orphanage: “I’ll come back for you, and together we’ll go to Jerusalem.” Seven hard years later, she still hasn’t returned.

On the hope that she and the rest of his family have somehow survived the terrible Nazi death camps and went on ahead of him, the thirteen-year-old sets out alone for the Promised Land. Dov is determined to be with his family again… even if it means risking his life to do it.

Emily Parkinson has it all as the spoiled only child of a British major stationed in 1947 Jerusalem. Her cozy, perfect world has cushioned her from the always-present danger that haunts the people of Palestine—until now. Tensions between Arab and Jew are growing fast as ships of illegal Jewish immigrants try to break through the British barricade. Now, not even Emily’s father will be able to protect her from what she is about to face.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful! September 5, 2000
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
The Promise of Zion series are the best books that I have ever read in my entire life! I have never been so interested in Jerusalem, Jews, or anything like that until I read these, and now I want to go to Jerusalem myself! Robert Elmer is a wonderful author and I would suggest reading any books by him. I read The Young Underground Series also, and they were AWSOME! If you have any hesitation about reading the books, make it stop right NOW, and buy the series and ENJOY (I promise you that you will! )

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!! November 9, 2000
Format:Paperback
This book is one of the best books that I have ever read in my life. The story makes you want to cry, laugh, and smile. I could never put the book down! I have read Promise To Zion #2, and it is also excellent. I am waiting to buy the third book! I have always been interested in the Holocaust, so when my dad brought this book home, I read it right away. It gave me many facts about the Jews, and how they were badly treated. I really love this book, and anybody else that reads it will love it too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Promise Breaker October 10, 2012
By skeeter
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The Promise Breaker is the story of one child's amazing and incredible journey from Warsaw Poland to Israel in search of his parents Imma (mother) and Abba (father). Dov Zewinski has had so many broken promises. This fictional story makes real historical events come alive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eye-Opening Story December 4, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Promise Broken
Wow! What a wonderful story woven around a young Jewish boy during and after WW II. Watching this child left on an orphanage steps by his mother, spending his childhood in horrible circumstances, surviving a death camp and feeling alienated and alone was heartbreaking to read. Following his tougher-than-nail teen determination to reach Israel where he hopes to be reunited with his family paints an accurate picture of the Jewish existence after the war. Add a young English girl who has grown up in Israel in a British Military family, and you have a complete picture of post WW II Palestine that ties the title Promise Breaker to the plot. Part of the series Promise of Zion, this is a great read for those who love historical fiction or want a better understanding of the Jewish struggle.

4.0 out of 5 stars Promise breaker April 14, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a decent book written for the time period of the post WWII years. The Jewish people have been promised a land of their own by the British as they realize so many Jewish people who survived the war have no where to go. Dov is a young Jewish boy who survived the war and work camps and is looking for his parents as are so many others. He is promised several things by different folks but is disappointed at promises not. Ming to fruition. He is finally within seeing distance of the 'promised land'...and chaos breaks out....

You can get this book downloaded on your kindle as I did from Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb little book May 5, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I got this as a Kindle freebie, and to be honest, I wasn't expecting much from this little book. Instead, I found it was very well written, informative, and had two unique perspectives; one of a child Holocaust survivor and one of a somewhat spoiled daughter of a British soldier stationed in Palestine. Nothing graphic or anything, but it is realistic and doesn't sugar-coat anything. Perfect for ages 11+.
I would definitely recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing! May 20, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I consider myself pretty well educated on the holocaust and WWII. However, I never thought about what really happened to the Jews after the war. I knew Israel was created in 1947 the Jews to have a nation again. I never knew that Britain controlled Palestine, or that Jews were blocked from Israel. I can't wait to read more in this series. I love how fascinating this story is, while still being historically accurate and well-researched.
