5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly suprised! December 19, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Bought this book for my sister but decided to read a few pages just to see what these romance novel's were all about. Romance novel's are not the kind of books I would ever buy for myself. After what I thought was a few minutes which was really an hour I found myself totally into the book. Needless to say I finshed the book and was pleasantly suprised how good it was. My sister is going to love this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars great romantic read June 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Pair one veteran, one struggling widow, and one adorable toddler and we have winner from Vickie McKeehan. I read McKeehan's Evil trilogy, and loved it. Promise Cove is a different type of romance, more traditional and charming. The story is just that, a story. Many books are all sex and little plot. Promise Cove is story, with sex the dessert, not the meal. I loved it, and am sorry i have only one title of McKeehan's books left to read. I hope more books come soon. Great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A touching romance July 13, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Promise cove is a very touching story. It is easy to read, and you will get lost in the story right away.

Jordan Phillips is widowed after her husband, Scott dies in Iraq. She is desperately trying to raise her child and keep her house out of foreclosure with no help from anyone. Instead of comforting Jordan in her time of need, the townspeople put up obstacles to her success and make life even more difficult for her.

Scotts' friend Nick Harris is suffering from PTSD and survivor's guilt. He promised Scott that he would take care of Jordan and her baby. He wants to keep his promise, but he also doesn't want to talk about what happened right away. He knocks on Jordan's door and instead of telling her why he really came, he offers to help her remodel her house. He delays telling her the full story as they work to turn the old house into a bed and breakfast. The bed and breakfast had been Scott's vision, and it was also how Jordan hoped to generate income.

Seasons pass as Nick hesitates and puts off telling Jordan the full story. They fall in love, and Nick hesitates even more. Should he let things continue as they are, or should he finally come clean and say what he should have said at the start? Will Nick hope that the unpleasant memories remain hidden, or will he let them surface and risk changing everything?

The characterization is brilliant. The dialogue is on point and moving, and the chemistry and tension are palpable. The romance is very well written as well. I am normally not a big fan of romance novels, but this one is so well done. It is not the usual sappy and unrealistic type I have come to expect from the genre. Instead, it is stirring and poignant.

Title: Promise Cove: A Pelican Pointe Novel ($3.99)
Author: Vickie McKeehan
Reviewer: George Shadow

Summary:
Stuck in backwater Pelican Pointe, California, Jordan Phillips is still trying to recover from the loss of her husband, Scott, who died in Iraq. She's left with a baby daughter to support and Scott's dream of turning the old Victorian family home into The Cove Bed and Breakfast, something he'd wanted to do before leaving for Iraq. But Jordan faces formidable odds at every turn. Facing foreclosure is the least of her problems. Pelican Pointe, Scott's hometown, has never really accepted her. The hostile town treats her like an outsider. Feeling isolated and lonely, the odds of success are heavily stacked against her until a stranger arrives.

Nick Harris is battling survivor's guilt, left over from the war. Haunted by an unwitting promise he made during the heat of battle, Nick has come to Pelican Pointe in hopes of simply unburdening his guilt to Scott's widow and moving on. But that all changes when he realizes Jordan is in way over her head. Facing an uphill battle, the two of them try to overcome every obstacle the townspeople throw at them.

As Nick and Jordan struggle to come to terms with the loss of Scott, each in their own way, they discover a promise kept, sometimes changes lives.

Social/Historical Context:
The Iraq war continues to be devastating on most American families who lost their loved ones in the war. Many have moved on, and many are still trying to do so. This is one such story, infused into a fictional romance. Author McKeehan has brought to life a very dramatic tale filled with raw human feelings, love, kindness and hatred.
