From Booklist

Award-winning Hatcher’s (Belonging, 2011) latest is a story of love, heartbreak, and redemption. If Allison Kavanagh had her way, she would be happily married and living close to her family. Instead, after inheriting her great-aunt’s mountain cabin, she resides there with only her little dog for company. Initially, Allison is consumed by her loneliness and regrets. Soon, though, she begins to make a new life for herself with fulfilling work, close friends, and meaningful hobbies. Eventually one of her favorite activities becomes immersing herself in her great-aunt Emma’s old journals, where she discovers a strong woman who faced trials similar to her own. Emma used her faith to carry her through her struggles, and Allison gradually allows herself to do the same. As Hatcher blends the past and present, Allison and Emma’s lives take on new meaning as we watch them each embark on solitary journeys. Hatcher’s inspirational novel dramatizes the perception that even when it seems like you’re alone, you are always part of a greater plan. --Carolyn Richard

Review

"Hatcher (Where the Heart Lives series) departs from her more recent historical novels for this contemporary exploration of the conundrum faced by believers when they accept God's word but can't see it being manifested in their lives ... The mountain setting is as appealing an aspect of this upbeat, well-paced novel as Allison, Emma, and their family and friends." ~Publishers Weekly

"Hatcher's beautifully crafted tale alternates between the past and the present. Allison and Emma are incredibly relatable characters, and readers are able to examine their own lives through the mirror of the novel's events. Filled with family and faith, the author's phrasing is exquisite and a treat to savor."

"A beautiful, heart-touching story of God's amazing grace, and how He can restore and make new that which was lost."

I have been reading Robin Lee Hatcher's books for a very, very long time. They have all been wonderful, but this one touches a deep place in the heart. The book is based on experiences in Robin's own life and how she reacted to them.

Allison ex husband Tony was a serious drinker and she finally gave him an ultimatum. He walked out and they are now divorced. She inherits a cabin in the Idaho mountains from her Great Aunt Emma, who has left many journals in the house. Allison begins to read them and some of the grace of God begins to shine through.

Allison is not sure about God at this point because she felt Him promise to save her marriage, yet she also heard Him say 'Let go."
She doesn't believe now that she can even trust God now. Didn't she hear Him right? Did she trust in God wrongly?

God begins to move in Allison's life in a tender, subtle way. She finds peace in the Idahoan mountains and some dear friends also.

God's grace is so evident in this book because it is only by the grace of God that Allison can move on and accomplish what she does in this book.

I was very touched that Robin shared so much of her life with her readers. She herself is a woman of grace, used by God to minister to others through her books. I know I have been greatly ministered to by several of her books at a time when I needed it.

Robin Lee Hatcher is one author whose books I will buy just on the strength of her name on the cover alone.

This book also gave me a promise that God can extend His grace into a difficult situation in my own life. I am hopeful again.

My Thoughts On The Book: I am a big fan of Robin Hatcher and love reading her books. This particular book really touched a heartstring and made it very special. I loved the interwoven story of Allison's great aunt, Emma. Both stories illustrate how God works in His own way and His own time. There are no such things as unanswered prayers, they are just not always answered the way we thought they should be, as Allison finds out. The stories lesson is to keep praying for those you love and be grateful for those who prayed for you and yours. Prayers make a difference. God hears your prayers. This book is a definite addition to my library for a future re-read and a group book study. I cannot wait to share and discuss this book with my book lover friends.

I finished A Promise Kept last night and it was one of the most beautiful books I've read. It kept my attention, the characters were different, each in their own way, but did not confuse me, the story within of Emma kept me turning the pages, I loved the sections of prayer as each made me hesitate to think of my own life and say a prayer and I was so sad to see it end. You showed your true and excellent worth in this book and I can see it climbing the charts. Congratulations on such brilliant work which produced a Beautiful story.

A Promise Kept
By: Robin Lee Hatcher

I loved A Promise Kept by Robin Hatcher. This book captured my interest from the first page. What happens when you think you hear a word from God, but then it doesn’t come to pass as you think it should? Does that mean that you heard God wrong? That you misunderstood what He promised to you?

A Promise Kept is the story of Allison Kavanagh and her husband Tony. He is an alcoholic. Allison offers him an ultimatum. She heard God promise to heal her marriage, so she thought if she forced him to change or lose her, Tony would change. Was she surprised when he walked out the door and they ended up divorced! To heal from her loss, Allison goes to live in the mountains in a cabin she inherited from her great aunt Emma.

When Allison finds journals that her great aunt had written years ago, she finds a much different woman than the one she thought she knew. And when she finds out Emma went through some of the same stuff she’s going through now, she hopes to find peace with her decision and understanding about what God has allowed to happen.

I enjoyed the back then-recent times interchange as I read the book. Emma lived during the 1920s-1930s. It wasn’t intrusive or confusing. It was like a story within a story. Both were very interesting and I kept reading to see what would happen next to Emma and to Allison. Along the way, I laughed and cried with the characters as they lived their lives and dealt with their hardships. “How often had she failed to trust God when things were at their bleakest, as if He hadn’t been right there with her?” Allison is reflecting on something she read in Emma’s journal. Realizing that you’re not alone is a big step in dealing with a situation.
