Book Description

May 26, 2010
New Adult Paranormal Romance ** Mature Content ** Recommended for ages 16+ due to sexual situations and language

First installment of award-winning author Kristie Cook's bestselling Soul Savers Series

Alexis Ames has a life full of promise...but not all promises can be kept.

When Alexis Ames is attacked by creatures that can't be real, she decides it's time she learns who she really is, with or without the help of her mother, who guards their family's secrets closely. After meeting the inhumanly attractive, multi-talented Tristan Knight, however, Alexis retreats behind her façade of normalcy...until she discovers he's not exactly normal either. Then their secrets begin to unravel.

Their union brings hope and promise to her family's secret society, the Angels' army, and to the future of mankind. But it also incites a dangerous pursuit by the enemy - Satan's minions and Tristan's creators. After all, Alexis and Tristan are a match made in Heaven and in Hell.

4.0 out of 5 stars Self-published book a pleasant surprise October 24, 2010
Format:Paperback
I began reading this book out of curiosity, to see if a self-published book lived up to the quality of a traditionally published one. And you know what? It didn't just 'live up to' the standard, but soared beyond it.

It is told from the perspective of Alexis, an eighteen-year old protagonist, so when you begin reading, it seems like Young Adult fiction (though the content definitely is not). This threw me a little because I don't read YA. But once I got over the 'young' voice, and started focusing primarily on the story, I was pleasantly surprised. It had me up late at night to 'just read another chapter', until I couldn't hold my head up any longer. When books do this to me, it's a success.

I'm a really fussy reader. I don't have any inclination to pick up a paranormal fantasy novel. So for a paranormal fanatasy novel, that reads like YA to hook me, the writer has to be good. And Kristie Cook is GOOD!

If you're looking for delicate elitist literary prose, then this book isn't for you. But if you're looking for an entertaining story to transport you into another world, to forget your woes, routine or monotony of the everyday, then pick this up. You won't be disappointed! I thoroughly enjoyed something that I thought I never would. So thank you, Kristie, for the wonderful experience!

5.0 out of 5 stars PROMISE will leave you wanting more of this story! July 29, 2010
Format:Paperback
This book shocked me. I really didn't know what to expect, but I truly didn't expect to be up all night reading it and to be completely blown away by the writing, story line, and characters. This book begins 9 years ago (from where book 2, Purpose, will pick up) and is from the point of view of Alexis. Alexis knows she is different but she realizes that even more once she is attacked by creatures that shouldn't even exist. Her mother tries to keep the truth from her and they move often to get away from possible dangers.

Then Alexis meets Tristan, who is gorgeous, mysterious, and seems to be very interested in Alexis. Alexis's mom instantly wants her to stay away from Tristan, and the fact that they seem to already know each other is obvious. An accident leads Alexis to find out the truth about herself, Tristan, and the creatures that are after her.

The writing in this book is outstanding! The way Kristie describes emotions, settings, and actions is so unique. It starts out with the best first few lines I think I have ever read in a book. I posted them on the excerpts post but I will post them again.

"The sensation of being watched clung to me like a spider web, invisible threads bristling the back of my neck and down my spine. I brushed my fingers across my shoulders, as if I could drag the feeling off and flick it away."

How can you NOT want to read more after reading that? Alexis and Tristan are so passionate about each other and even though they have their issues to work out, their love shines through each page. They felt so real! The story takes a lot of twists and turns and will leave you guessing the entire time. What exactly is Tristan, where does their connection come from, and will it all work out?

5.0 out of 5 stars An Awesome Supernatural :) September 14, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Growing up can be hard when you are normal but when you are different it can be a nightmare. For Alexis, she has always been considered a freak even more so when an incident occured in her science class and the class caught her. Alexis has the ability to heal herself immediately , in ways she reminded me of Claire from the hit TV Show Heroes - a cross between her and Mercy Thompson from Patrica Briggs novels. Every couple of months , Alexis and her mother Sophia have been moving and running - Alexis's life has been a constant upheavel of different surnames and different towns. She has never felt anywhere so peaceful until recently - their latest move in where Alexis starts college unfortunately Alexis has been suffering visions and nightmares of people after her - Has it got something to do with her abilities ? Enter Tristan , he is the hot guy on campus and surprise , surprise he is interested or so it seems in Alexis. As the novel progresses we see Alexis fall for Tristan but it seems he is hiding a dark secret abot his past and he knows more about Alexis than she even knows . As the romance blossoms , we start to wonder whether their love is for real or does Tristan have an ulterior motive ?
Alexis also discovers in Promise , her family heritage and a Pandora's box is open and secrets are revealed.
Will Alexis life ever return to normal or is the change and discoveries only just beginning ?
Find out in Kristie Cook's novel Promise - Book #1 in the Soul Savers Series.

2.0 out of 5 stars If you've read Twilight, you've read Promise. April 13, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
**If you haven't read Twilight, don't read this review. If you have, the spoilers won't matter anyway.**

I wanted so very much to love this book. I read the synopsis on Goodreads.com and it seemed interesting. When the Kindle price on Amazon went to 99 cents, I snagged it.

My delight at the price, though, was where the happy ended.

This review may lean slightly toward the side of spoiler-ish, so stop reading now if you want. Then again, if you've even half a clue what went on in Twilight, you'll have no surprises in Promise.

The protagonist is a young girl who believes she's ugly as sin but who keeps getting told by everyone else that she's gorgeous. The self-loathing yet beautiful young girl moves to a new town and once there she meets a new guy who she is, of course, immediately attracted to. This guy is mysterious, slightly creepy, and (again, of course) drop dead gorgeous. Oh, and everyone else thinks he's bad news.

Guy's name is Tristan, which I admit is quite a bit nicer (in my opinion) than Edward. Tristan is constantly wanting to kill Alexis even though he loves her. He saves her from a potentially/probably fatal car accident, at which point she figures out he's not really all that "normal". No, people, I'm not just superimposing the Twilight plot over this book in some sort of confused daze...this really happens.

Now I could have forgiven this. Really, I could have, because Kristie Cook's writing is at least a bit better than Mrs. Meyer's. But she lost me with the craptastic "intimate" stuff.

Alexis practically throws herself at Tristan. In fact, she literally does. She begs him repeatedly to have sex with her, but of course he refuses.
