Book Description

July 1, 2012 The Pebble Creek Amish Series

A Promise for Miriam, the first book in a brand-new romantic series from popular author Vannetta Chapman, introduces the Amish community of Pebble Creek and some of the kind, caring people there. As they face challenges to their community from the English world, they come together to reach out to their non-Amish neighbors while still preserving their cherished Plain ways.

Amish schoolteacher Miriam King loves her students. At 26, most women her age are married with children of their own, but she hasn't yet met anyone who can convince her to give up the Plain school that sits along the banks of Pebble Creek. Then newcomer Gabriel Miller steps into her life, bringing his daughter, an air of mystery, and challenges Miriam has never faced before.

Will Gabe be able to let go of the past that haunts him? He thinks he just wants to be left alone, but the loving and warm community he and his daughter have moved to has other plans for him. After a near tragedy is averted, he hesitantly returns offers of help and friendship, and he discovers he can make a difference to the people of Pebble Creek--and maybe find love again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grief, new love, the quiet plain Amish way July 8, 2012
Format:Paperback
I've lived as widower, faced the grief while trying to begin a new life. The title suggests Miriam as protagonist, but men will relate to Gabe. He faces major life changes and responsibility. Girls will see Miriam as a committed career feminine gal with a family yearning. The 2 struggles attract. By author design, they merge in an Amish district. Little did they know it would touch the entire village of Cashton.
A great book for a mixed gender book reading group. His view-her take.

Tired of sympathetic stares (that REALLY happens), Gabe moves his daughter north, away from a sad ending. Heartache and problems follow the move, even for little Gracie. I like this author, Vannetta Chapman, as she shows the humanness of an Amish community--not just the peculiarities derived from their faith and connecting lifestyle choices. There's a struggle theme that's true for all people, not only Amish.

Find more subplots in this Pebble Creek story than stitch styles on a sampler. More barn scenes than bedrooms in this light romance. Blizzards to town council squabbles provide adventure and suspense.
The BEST Amish Christmas morning scene I've every read. And book 2's prologue and chapter one (printed after the glossary and discussion questions in this book) promises a second delightful Pebble Creek tale. I will pick it up too.

By the way, my (reviewer's) real-life second chance love and marriage thrives, thanks to God.

Being a teacher, and having visited the Amish Country in Lancaster, I so enjoyed reading this book. It is one of my famorites that I have read this summer. I visited one of the Amish Schools while in Lancaster, and this book was just fantastic. It was so vivid that I felt like I was right there with the characters in the book. Loved it!!!!!!!!

I like all of Vanetta's books but I really like her mysteries the best! Her Amish stories are a good read without brutality and vulgarity and this I love!
