Book Description

January 1, 2000
Each of the four plays in Promise You Won't Get Mad deals with the kind of problems that young people might encounter in real life. The dialogue is often humorous, but the plays bring up serious issues. Plays found in Promise You Won't Get Mad include:
  • In "Promise You Won"t Get Mad," boys discover a way to play arcade games without paying for them. Is what they are doing really stealing?
  • "It's Not a Party. It's a Get-Together" deals with peer pressure, lying to parents, and taking responsibility.
  • "Romeo, Romeo, Wherefore Art Thy Costume?" takes a look at the power of rumor and gossip.
  • "Election Day Blues" looks at the ups and downs of taking a risk.
The plays include questions for discussion, writing topics, and other activities that will challenge students to think. Each play runs approximately 15–25 minutes and includes 14–17 roles.

This review is from: Promise You Won't Get Mad: And Other Read-Aloud Plays for Young People (Paperback)
This is an awesome book. I used it with my seventh grade Language Arts students while studying a genre unit on drama. They LOVED the plays for a few reasons. The plots explored relevant issues; most of the students got a part each day; we had some very lively discussions that they enjoyed. The students wrote their own plays based on a theme studied in class. These plays gave them some good examples! I would recommend this book to anyone who teaches middle school aged children.
