Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
If their previous releases left any doubt, Promised Land finally cemented one indisputable fact: the Holmes Brothers are the finest rhythm & blues group playing today. With stirring gospel harmonies, gutbucket blues chops, and a dash of country, they've created a sound solely their own. From the effortlessly melodic "Easy Access" to the lovely "You're Good for Me" to the relentless funk of "Got Myself Together," these songs are as diverse as they are expressive of one soulful vision. And superb musicianship is only half the equation; the Holmes Brothers' strongest weapons are faith and passion. Anyone not moved by the Southern gospel of "I Surrender All" or the despair and longing of Popsy Dixon's vocal on "Train Song" should proceed directly to the morgue. The trio even shows off its uncanny knack for reinventing songs with a smoldering version of the Beatles' "And I Love Her." Promised Land stands as one of the great releases of the '90s. --Ken Hohman

5.0 out of 5 stars Another classic by NYC's finest, October 10, 1999
By Frederick Rudofsky (East Greenbush, NY USA) - See all my reviews
My favorite band of the last ten years, The Holmes Brothers deliver another superb album of blues, soul, gospel and rock and roll. If you buy this one, get all all of their cd's, too. Each is worthy of five stars. And, see them in concert-- they are unbelievable!

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this now!, August 2, 1999
By Ben Smith (somewhere) - See all my reviews
This album is easily one of the best I have heard. I am a fan of the blues, and recently found myself wandering farther into soul and gospel territory in search of great music. Well, I found it.

The Holmes Brothers are phenomenal musicians. They combine three great voices, sweet blues, soulful grooves, and powerful tunes. You will feel their strong emotions and be rewarded by their very experienced sound. A fun and playful album at times, it can also be profound and thoughtful. Overall, exquisitely executed.

I can't wait to get my hands on their other releases. I hardly knew that a band could be this good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Where was this recorded?, October 29, 2008
By Cabman (New Awlins,La. U.S.A.) - See all my reviews
I just got turned on to this by a very good German friend and was curious.I know that this cover photo is the front of Snake and Jake's Christmas Lounge in my neighborhood (Carrollton,New Orleans,La.) and I was wondering if the Holmes Brothers had ever played there or,if not,how did this photo end up on the cover? Anybody know? Thanx Randman
