Book Description

January 9, 2008
Raelene Strattford knows God has promised never to leave or forsake her. But after the catastrophic deaths of her parents, she doesn t believe it. What kind of God would take a girl's family and leave her alone in a wild land where women have no voice? Gustaf Hanssen has admired Raelene from afar for a while, but his poor attempt at courting her in the past has made him unwelcome in her life. When Gustaf promises Raelene's dying father that he will take care of her, he finds himself bound to her happiness, her success, and her well-being in ways he never imagined. To keep his word must Gustaf really oversee all of Raelene's affairs, find her a husband, and maintain her farm, while she does nothing but scorn him? Can God reach through Raelene's pain and self-centeredness and give her the love that awaits, if only she will accept His will?

More About the Author

Amber Stockton began her publishing career as Amber Miller, using her middle and maiden names. Now, she publishes under her married name. Her first is Tiffany, and most people call her Tiff. She married the love of her life in July 2007 and lives in beautiful Colorado with her husband, their daughter born April 2009 and their Australian Shepherd/Flat-haired Retriever mix, Roxie.

Her first book, Promises, Promises, released in February 2008. It's part of a series set in Delaware during the Colonial period. They were repackaged for a state set entitled Liberty's Promise (March 2010). She has also sold another series set in historical Michigan during the Industrial Revolution. Those released in 2009 and will be repackaged as Michigan Brides (December 2010).

She firmly believes a good book can take you away from your present reality into a world you've never seen. With a passion for history, her books take you back to the worlds that once were and give you a slice of life amidst the adventures of her characters.

She got involved with web design in 1997, when she was asked to take over running the official web site for the television series Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. That eventually led to a series of negotiations where she was offered the job of running world-renowned actress Jane Seymour's official fan site. Now, with over 50 clients, she and her husband run the design and consulting business of Eagle Designs!

Some other tidbits: she was once the only living female Miller in her family; she is related to former President Woodrow Wilson through her great-grandfather's sister; she's traveled to 41 of the 50 U.S. states and collects playing cards from all of her travels; and she once recorded a CD with a 100+ member choir.

She loves to hear from her readers. Feel free to begin a discussion below or check out her author site and leave feedback there.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very sweet story, August 24, 2008
Amber Miller has written a very sweet, touching, wholesome story in Promises, Promises. She has done her homework in bringing to life the historical setting and time period. The characters are believable in working through their problems. Amber weaves throughout the story the struggles of faith and how God keeps His promises and of His goodness. I highly recommend this book--and look forward to reading the next in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars a charming, well-written story, August 23, 2008

(VINE VOICE)
"Promises, Promises" by Amber Miller is the sweet story of Raelene, a young woman who has lost her parents in a tragic accident in 1700s Delaware. Gustaf, the neighbor who has adored Raelene from afar, has promised her dying father that he will take care of her and find her a husband. The Swedish phrases are charming. Gustaf's insecurity around Raelene is adorable. The refusal of the town's businessmen to deal with a woman really frustrated me, but transported me to the time and place in history where this actually took place. This is one talented author!

The spiritual message in the novel is of critical importance - Raelene has abandoned her faith in God because of her parents' deaths. She is consistently exposed to God because of Gustaf's faith. Amber Miller has beautifully crafted Raelene's return to faith as a woman who has been there and knows the desperation of questioning her own faith. It truly inspired me to hang on tighter to God when I actually felt the temptation to give up. I also appreciated the natural development of the love story - there were no contrived conflicts and minimal ignorance on the part of the characters. Bravo, Amber! This is a worthwhile and inspirational read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Promise Fulfilled, August 14, 2008
By
Every author makes a promise to the reader that their story will be worth the reader's while. So the title of this book is most appropriate because Miller amply fulfills that promise with this moving debut novel.

Promises, Promises is set in the 1730s in the lower counties of Pennsylvania, which later separated to become the state of Delaware. Raelene Stratford turns her back on God after the tragic death of her parents. Believing he is beneath her, she rejects handsome Gustaf Hanssen's efforts to court her. She even rejects his offer to help with the daunting task of managing her parents' farm--until the restrictions of colonial society leave her with no other choice.

In spite of the sting of her rejection Gustaf's quiet love remains faithful, as do his attempts to gently lead her back to God, attempts Raelene spurns. The complication is that when he becomes her overseer, he is also bound to find her a husband before her eighteenth birthday or she will forfeit her land.

Complications abound and kept me turning the pages, hoping that the heartsore Raelene will finally let down her defenses and find healing, turn back to the God who loves her, and open her heart to the only man who cherishes her for herself instead of holding ambitions to gain her land. Miller does not disappoint. The characters' emotions are sympathetically drawn and believable. The plot twist and turns kept me guessing. I'm giving this story 4 stars because I suspect the next book in the series will be even better.
