I have read a lot of books but....,

This review is from: Promises Made (Indigo) (Mass Market Paperback)
This book is not high on my list at all. I bought it because it sounded like a good plot which it was, along with the sub-plot; however, there are so many questions...
1. Renee never ask Craig WHY he has to get married now after all these years. She thinks he's crazy but she does it anyway after constantly talking about how she does stupid things?!!! WTH? 2. Does Craig honestly think Renee is not going to find out about the money? omg. 3. Renee's mad at Craig because he lied but yet you married him for protection against your ex that you didn't tell him about so..... ugh! I haven't finished it yet but I got so frustrated reading this BULL that I had to get up and put my opinions on here. Renee is sooo freaking DUMB it's killing me!! The only reason I'm going to finish the book is because the sub-plot is somewhat decent.

I think this is a good book. It grabs your interests from the first chapter. Lots of twists and turns and unexpected event, keeps you turning the pages. The characters are real, funny and easy to relate too. I finished it in two days...despite how busy I was. I would highly recommend this book to all looking for a great romantic and suspenseful read.

Why do fools fall in love?
Craig, an intelligent, single businessman, found out that his grandfather left him a $3 million dollar inheritance, but with a stipulation: he has to be married to receive it. Craig thought he had the perfect solution by digging up the past, a childish promise he and Renee, a childhood friend, made to marry one another when they were younger. Will the promise suffice the terms of the inheritance? Or, will the problems that rise test why fools fall in love? The author effectively developed the book's concepts and chain of events, which helps to engage readers in the characters' lives. The ideas and characters presented were not outlandish, but reasonable and credible, which made it much easier for me to relate to the story and to be captivated by the drama. The content was also non-offensive, and can be enjoyed by many readers from various walks of life. After reading my first book by Bernice Layton, I am now compelled to purchase any book written by her in the near future, and will gladly persuade others to do the same! 5 Pink Diamonds Sistah Shauna of the SistahFriend Book Club

first love revisited,
By BCPD Fan "Mrs. B" (Baltimore, MD USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Promises Made (Indigo) (Mass Market Paperback)
This book stirred up all those long forgotten memories of our hopes, dreams, and unrelenting passions of first love...only Renee gets her chance to relive them in her adult life as Craig's wife. And with anything that seems unbelievable, she soon finds out it's more her dream come true than his. Mrs. Layton has done a great job at capturing the essence of the characters and offers a very pleasant means by which you can spend a lazy afternoon or two escaping into this lovely romantic fairytale.

Why Secrets?,
By Linda Y "always reading" (Columbus, OH) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Promises Made (Indigo) (Mass Market Paperback)
I really enjoyed this book, lots of humor, believable and lots of romance. I just didn't understand why Craig had to keep hiding the secret about why he needed to marry? The story was great without all that extra drama, I think the author could've made him honest to begin without taking away from the story.

Is He For Real?,
This review is from: Promises Made (Indigo) (Mass Market Paperback)
After seventeen years, Renee Richards gets a call from the last person she thought she would ever hear from with the strangest request she has ever heard. Craig Thompson is the best friend of Renee's brother who died seventeen years ago. She always had a crush on Craig, and on the day her brother died, a 16-year-old Craig asked a 12-year-old Renee to marry him...when he was ready. Well Craig is ready now. He is to inherit $3 million from his grandfather, but there is one stipulation: Craig has to be married in order to get his money, and he really needs that money. Renee is running from an ex who stole money from her and is now threatening her life. So when Craig calls with the outrageous proposition, she agrees for her own safety. Will this marriage of convenience turn out to be true love?
For the most part, the story in Promises Made flows really well. There are a few instances where the story seems somewhat disconnected, but overall it has a nice flow. The characters are very likeable and with them Layton brings in a hint of everyday, real life humor. There are several secondary characters that help make the story. There is also an element of suspense that keeps the pages turning. Promises Made is a really good book. Reviewed by Tenecia for Urban Reviews

I loved this book. There was never a dull moment for me. It pulls you in from the start and keeps you guessing. The story line was very realistic, easy to follow and funny. Lovable characters with a lot of drama going on. I think the author did a wonderful job. If your looking for a good romantic suspense, you found it here.

Promises kept,

Renee Richards and Craig Thompson have known each other since they were children when Craig was best friends with Renee's brother. After her brother's untimely death, Craig made a promise to look Renee up when he was ready to get married, and she agreed. Now he is ready and PROMISES MADE takes us on their journey to lasting love through all the lies, betrayal, deaths and other drama in between.
When Craig contacted Renee and proposed she honor her promise, she thought he had lost his mind. However, she found out quickly that he was serious. Craig was in a situation which required he get married and Renee was dealing with an ex-boyfriend who was threatening her. Both go into the trial marriage with secrets and it will take more than promises for this couple to make their marriage lasting. PROMISES MADE had intrigue and plenty drama, and the romance evolved in a believable manner. There were several characters who seemed pivotal for the overall suspense. However, the pacing of the story halfway through was slowed down with minutiae details involving the main and the supporting characters. The story itself was interesting, but the slow down in the middle made this a laborious. Yet, closer to the end, the pacing picked up and the story seemed to flow at a more brisk pace and garnered my full attention. Reviewed by Cashana Seals of The RAWSISTAZ(tm) Reviewers

Love it!,
This review is from: Promises Made (Indigo) (Mass Market Paperback)
I had the pleasure of meeting this author (and her husband) at a book event I attended and she and her husband were engaging, open and genuine. In addition to that I liked the premise of all of her books, so I purchased all three. I stated with Promises Made and I love it! Yes, it is a little implausible that Renee would marry Craig out of the blue without knowing why he suddenly needed to get married and the fact that she thought she could be sued was a huge stretch...but its fiction! Besides that, the entire book was engaging. I really liked all of the twists and turns and that Renee and Craigs parents both had long marriages that served as a model for them. I enjoyed the PIs role in Renee's life as well. Overall it is a great read! I'm so happy I purchased all three books because I'm off for winter break ad I plan to finish them all before I go back to school!Keep up the great work Mrs. Layton! |
