Heart Wrenching and Heart Warming All in One,
By
This review is from: Promises Prevail (Paperback)
First off, don't make the mistake that I did and read this series out of order. After reading the first book in the series, "Promises Linger", I was so eager to get my hands on the next two that I settled for the only one I could immediately find, which was this one, "Promises Prevail", the third book in the series. I loved this book just as much as the first one, but the main characters from the second book, "Promises Keep", kept popping up and I kept wishing that I'd read their story before the third book. It wasn't too much of a disappointment though to dampen my enthusiasm for Clint's story.
Jenna Hennessy is a shy and unassuming woman looking for a way to get by in the world after her abusive husband takes a trip six feet under. Trained through years of crazed religious spoutings by her father and then years of physical and mental abuse by her husband, she knows no other way to please a man except by total obedience. Thinking herself unworthy of any love or kindness, she does her best to stay out of the limelight and tries not to be a temptation for any man. Clint McKinnely is a hardened man of the law that has seen one hard and hopeless day too many. Thinking himself incapable of happiness, he nevertheless sets his sights on Jenna, having wanted her since the first time he saw her outside the mercantile, standing beside her husband. He sets her up in her own bakery and becomes her shield from any other man that might be entertaining less than ideal thoughts about his woman. One morning, after making his routine visit to Jenna's bakery, he discovers her secret she's been hiding - a newborn baby girl left on her doorstop. Clint knows that Jenna will need a husband to keep the baby, and he sees the opportunity he's always been looking for. He promptly steps in to fill the role and he and Jenna's tenuous relationship begins on unsure footing. Jenna's baby isn't the only secret she's hiding and Clint realizes he'll have to handle Jenna with the utmost care in order to make their marriage work and to discover why she is so terrified of men. Clint and Jenna were the perfect pair, her sweet innocent nature a calm and soothing balm for Clint's hardened attitude. When it came to Jenna though, Clint could sometimes melt like butter, quickly able to see when she was in distress about something and knowing just how to calm her nerves. Never has a woman had it so lucky. Clint was such a sensitive, sexy and mouth-watering hero (I'm thinking these type of men are author McCarty's signature style of hero - no complaints here!). His understanding but calm influence over Jenna was the sure ticket to drawing out her true fiery and bold nature. And it was no easy task for him, after all the years she suffered, praying, waiting and hoping for a way to endure each day of misery. I cried for Jenna, I even cried for Clint, who needed just as much love to cure the scars in his heart as well. Who doesn't love an alpha male that is capable of extreme patience, kindness and love for his wife? Clint is a shining star in "Promises Prevail" and Jenna is his reward for all his patience and genuine good heart. Read this book with the promise of this reviewer that you will love it.

I'll skip the synopsis as others have done it before me. I don't care for westerns, I don't care for historical romances, and I don't care for rough sex. This book falls into all 3 catagories but I still gave it 5 stars. Almost against my will I loved this book. Aspects of the sex were graphic and made me squeamish but the story was so excellent I just skipped over the parts that got to be too much for me. I loved the characters: how considerate, loving, and passionate the Alpha male was; how strong and proud the Heroine was, despite her very damaged psyche. It's probably not PC but I gotta tell you, the hero fighting so fiercely for the heroine just turned me to mush and that is definitely not me! If you can handle the graphic sex description, I would highly recommend the book. It's definitely got a place on my "keeper" shelf.

In Promises Prevail we finally get Clint <sigh> McKinnely's story! This is the long anticipated third book of the "Promises" series. Clint is a tough, hard honest man(with a secret) who's wanted Jenna for a long time. Jenna is a woman who's had a very hard life thats left her with an incredible inner strength while still retaining her caring, loving self. After her abusive husband is killed,Jenna starts her life alone until someone leaves an infant on her doorstep. At a time when a unmarried woman alone has no chance of keeping a baby,Clint steps in and offers to marry her so she can keep the baby.
This book touched my heart, made me laugh, made me cry,I could not put it down until I read the very last line. You'll get to visit Asa,Elizabeth,Cougar,Mara, and The Reverend from the the other two "Promises" books. Each of the "Promises" books can be read as stand alones, but you'll definitely want the others and wfter you've read them you'll be anxiously waiting for the next in the series. You can't go wrong with a book written by Sarah McCarty!

This was one incredible book. It starts off with Clint. He is everything you would want in a male; confident and strong, tall, good looking, and incredibly protective over the people he loves. Now that he is getting older and is more settled he wants to find a wife. He doesn't expect to find love, just someone to pass the time with and to give him children. He secretly wants Jenna but won't allow himself that pleasure because he is hardened by the cruelities of life and thinks his soul is too empty to treat her right. Well, fate had a way of stepping in when Jenna comes across a newborn baby and is told she will not be able to hold on to it if she is not married. That is where Clint steps in and agrees to marry her; which he secretly is more than happy to do.
Jenna has her own demons to fight as well. She has been mentally and physically abused by her father and her late husband. Because of this she lacks confindence and always has her head down and cannot even look people in the eye. She is constantly edgy, and uncertain of herself. Clint helps her overcome her demons; he helps her be a more confident woman. He does it in such a sweet and gentling way. He always seems to know when something is bugging her or has her upset; he can read her so well. Even when he gets mad at her, he is all bark and no bite. Her love heals him and fills his empty heart, and his loves heals her and makes her a stronger person. This was an awesome book. I just loved the way he talked to her; the way he treated her. This book is a must read.

Promises Prevail is surely Sarah McCarty's best book so far.
Jenna is the most vulnerable of heroines, having been subject to such unspeakable cruelties, but the strongest and most likeable. Clint is a tortured hero, but not so much that he cannot balance Jenna. This is a very emotional read, veering from tears to laughter. There was one part of the story that was really shocking to me, but it was an incredibly revealing insight into one of the characters, who I hope will have a story later in the series. Congratulations on an absolutely fantastic story Ms McCarty.

A wonderful, thrilling, emotional read,

The third book in the Promises series is the best yet! This story revolves around Jenna and Clint. Jenna has had much emotional turmoil in her life, and is a fragile, yet, incredibly strong, woman. Clint doesn't see himself for what he is... a strong, dependable, amazingly sweet and loving man. Amazing, considering what an alpha male he is.
And that is the best part... to see this wonderful alpha hero and stubborn, strong, fragile heroine fall in love and build a life together. Sarah McCarty has done it again, given us a beautiful story, filled with characters with depth and humanity, and managed to make it one hell of a hot, sexy read. This entire series is a must-buy, but make sure you don't miss out on Clint and Jenna!

Another "MUST READ" By the EXTREMELY talented Sarah McCarty,

When you read the first page of Promises Prevail, you get a general feeling for the story, and it gets better and better with every page you turn.
Clint is a hero like no other I've ever read about. He sees himself as flawed when in reality he is a remarkable man who cares deeply and loves possessively those who are lucky enough to be close to him. Jenna has been through so many trials and tribulations in her life, it's amazing she's come out of them sane. She's a remarkable woman, who with the love and support of a good man(Clint) finds her true inner strength. In Promises Prevail, the incredibly talented Sarah McCarty weaves a breathtaking tale of strength, determination, compassion, and love that goes beyond spectacular. Promises Prevail will have you laughing, gasping, sighing, and crying. The range of the emotions within this book goes beyond anything I've ever read. The story of Clint and Jenna in Promises Prevail is like no other, and one I won't ever forget.

The Promise series is an incredible read, especially Promises Prevail. Clint is more than man enough for one woman and has the heart to go with it. Jenna is working hard to rebuild her life after her husband tries to kill her but cannot resist the attraction that keeps Clint in her thoughts. Their live's begin on unsteady ground after kind-hearted & barren Jenna takes in a newborn indian babe but may not be able to defend her if she does not marry soon. Who else other than sexy, strong, and dominant Clint to the resue. Clint's intense sexual desires not only keeps Jenna happy but me as well. I wouldn't miss this series for the world! If you do, you're missing out. Promises PrevailPromises - Promises LingerPromises Reveal (Berkley Sensation Historical Romance)Promises - Promises Keep

I absolutely loved this book. Jenna and Clint set the pages on fire with their passion and the storyline kept me turning the pages. The way Clint helped Jenna overcome the brutality of her past was wonderful. He was so amazingly tender with her while still sexy and passionate. Jenna's willingness to trust Clint after everything she had been through with her abusive husband and father was the one element of the book that made the characters real. If you like your historical romances hot, sexy and complex, this is the book for you. |
