Irenaeus is about as good as it gets among the early church fathers. He belongs to the second century, he's respected by everyone both contemporary to him and modern, he's two links from the apostles (John to Polycarp to Irenaeus), and he's got a lot to say that gives us great insight into early Christianity. Oh, he was also a missionary to barbarian Gaul, living in what is now Trier, Germany, and he oversaw a number of churches in that area.

The Proof of the Apostolic Preaching is a much shorter work than Against Heresies, his more well-known and readily available tome.

It's awesome this is available on Kindle. It's as orthodox and early and comprehensive as any early Christian writing gets, though maybe First Clement could compete with it.
