* * * * * FIVE STAR REVIEW,
This review is from: Proof (The Great Awakenings Series #2) (Paperback)
Harrison Shaw is a poor young lawyer in New York about to get the opportunity of a lifetime. Living in the great melting pot of immigration, poverty and wealth that made up New York in the late 1850's he's already overcome staggering odds to become a lawyer. When he's offered a clerkship with the most prestigious attorney in the city, it would seem that Harrison is on his way up, about to leave the slums of Brooklyn for the mansions of Millionaire Row.
Eager to move forward, Harrison doesn't look for and doesn't see the strings attached to his new place in society. Before he can see the intricate pattern of the threads, he's caught in a web of favors, lies, bribery, vendettas and destruction. His mentor, J.K. Jarves, sucks the life out of anyone who crosses him. When Harrison decides he can't be part of that predatory world, he himself becomes the prey. Harrison Shaw's life and career are destroyed by his decision to walk away from J.K. Jarves. He's not able to walk away from Victoria Jarves, J.K.'s daughter so easily though. This book is the first in a series set during the time of the Great Revival of the 1850's. I love this setting. The Great American Revivals, with D.L. Moody and Charles Finney and the Great Chicago Fire are proof; Proof that no matter how evil the times, no matter how corrupt the society, the Holy Spirit is able to light a fire in the hearts of people and transform a whole nation. This book was seamless and absorbing. I started the first chapter about ten minutes before my kids got home from school (you think I would have known better) and I was supposed to be tutoring one of my neighbors in high school French. The French lesson didn't go so well. We did about an hour of work and then we adjourned to the living room to read. It was torture to put the book down even that long. I finished it that night, and when I put it down, all I said was, Wow. The Great Revival started with six men and a lunch time prayer meeting. It turned into a movement where tens of thousands repented and surrendered their lives to the Lord. If that isn't inspiration for you, I don't know what is. I loved the story, I loved the setting, but most of all I loved the reminder. The reminder that God uses small people to accomplish huge things. All he asks for is trust and faith. He does the rest.

This book is a real page-turner. Cavanaugh & Bright shine in this tale of a poor young lawyer who is smitten with the rich lawyer's daughter & must prove that the Holy Spirit exists to win her hand. Highly recommended. Great Christian fiction.

Harrison Shaw is a legal intern for the renowned New York lawyer J.K Jarves in the year 1857. But when Shaw resigns the internship because on account of philosophical differences, Jarves feels jilted. Moreover, in part because of Harrison's witness, his daughter has come to faith in Christ.
So an incensed Jarves sues Harrison's church and uses the trial as a platform to attack and destroy Christianity, and as an opportunity to quiet the flames of revival sweeping the States. There is also an interesting romantic link in the book, and several twists and turns in the storyline that give the book depth and substance. This is another great offering from the creative and godly Jack Cavanaugh. The speeches and articles in the book are also stirring and well crafted. I don't read a lot of fiction, but this is one book I'm going to recommend to others.

If you like stories about courtroom scenes, you will sit at the end of your seat while reading this book. When it is all done with, you cannot deny God's existence and the power of prayer. Pick up the whole "The Great Awakening" series.

This was a great book. It tied in historical facts, but was fictional which kept my interest. I would recommend this book to anyone who's interested in reading about one of the "Great Awakenings" in our history. Excellent!!

"Proof"--by Jack Cavanaugh and the late Bill Bright--is an extraordinary novel... a truly great book! If the Amazon.com website, with a scale of one to five stars, were to allow ten... then this book would be a ten! I strongly recommend "Proof"...it's a book that readers won't soon forget.

I'm an avid reader and I read through this book in 3 days with my eyes blurry. It was that good. This is by far one of my top favorite books. It combines mystery with historical fiction while weaving God through the pages.

I Liked Reading This Book,

Harrison Quincy Shaw had very little, but his lack of money and material things didn't stop him from giving to others. He cared so much about the less fortunate that even impending danger couldn't keep him from helping them in times of need.
Harrison had a heart for people - one woman, in particular. He also had a heart for God, which was why this man, inexperienced in his chosen profession, was determined to give his all as the defense lawyer when J.K. Jarves, a powerful prosecutor who would stoop to anything to win a case, filed suit against Harrison's church. I liked reading this book. It was an intriguing, entertaining, spiritually enlightening page turner. I plan to read more books in The Great Awakenings Series. |
