Book Description

"Proof of Our Resolve" is a novel about a Texas Army National Guard infantry platoon deployed to Afghanistan. This books attempts to convey some of the experiences of soldiers serving in Afghanistan through a fictional platform. The characters are representative of and much like the Soldiers and Marines one would find in a combat unit. The story's environment and tactical operations are as close to real as possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars A war novel that feels real in every respect November 14, 2012
By Daniel
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Sometimes the stars just align and drop a book in your lap. Call it divine providence, call it fate. Whatever label you choose, it's the best explanation for how I came to read this book. Chris Hernandez was kind enough to leave some comments on my blog, so I dropped by his blog and found out that he was a combat veteran with a recently published book. Curiosity piqued, it was only a matter of minutes before Kindle had my money and I had Chris's book.

Proof of Our Resolve reads like a true story. It's a narrative that has something real to say, and expressing that reality takes precedence over the embellishments of mindless entertainment or the metaphors and literary subversions of highbrow fiction. It's the experience of a war veteran told through the lens of a fictional medium, which provides a voice for the personal struggles that could never be captured in a simple memoir. Autobiographies--the ones I've read, in any case--tend to work backwards from a known conclusion, and are never as soul-baring or revealing as they suggest. By projecting autobiography into a fictionalized milieu, however, there is no escaping the inside voice or internal conflict. Rather than getting some butt-covering burnishing of credentials after the fact, this feels more like a journey into the very soul of a soldier.

Proof of Our Resolve starts off in breathless fashion by inserting us directly into a military convoy in Afghanistan, where we half-expect an IED attack at any moment. We are also introduced to Sergeant First Class Jerry Nunez, who serves as the narrative anchor to the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing... September 28, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
As a French Afghan vet, I had the great honor to spend a few months shoulder to shoulder with the author. But this has nothing to do with the fact that once I had started reading his book, I could not drop it anymore. If you want to know how we really felt like over there, answering the call of duty, you need to get this masterpiece. If you don't care, get it anyways: it's just an amazing, gripping story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Proof of Our Resolve December 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I bought this book and finished it in 2 days. It is a damn good book and about as realistic as you can get. I served in the Army for almost 20 years as a Scout squad leader and spent a few tours in Iraq. Everything that Chris wrote in the book reminded me of my time deployed, from the friendly banter the men enjoyed with each other to the dark realities of combat. I can't wait for the future books from Chris to come out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lives up to great war fiction of the past. July 16, 2013
By R.D.
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I recently went through a phase of reading Vietnam war memoirs and novels. I am myself an Iraq vet, and did some contract work in Afghanistan a couple of years ago, but the Vietnam war has always been interesting to me as I have relatives who served in that conflict. Novels of the Vietnam war set a high standard for war fiction (Matterhorn, The Things They Carried, et al), and Chris Hernandez's book lives up to those standards punch for punch. I found it uniquely awesome that Chris is a National Guard soldier, and that his novel is about National Guard troops... Too often, the 'citizen-soldiers' who have fought and died in the last decade-plus of warfare get overlooked. Sure, they're not special ops dudes, sure, that guy behind the caliber-.50 could be a plumber or a school-teacher at home. But these guys are dedicated and often extremely skilled warfighters. Chris does wonderful justice to these types in Proof of Our Resolve, and also provides some great insight into joint warfare as it goes on in Afghanistan. French troops, the importance of Afghans in many operations, and inter-service cooperation with the Marines, Army, Air Force... It's all accurate, at least based on my experience. The character development is good (I won't say terrific, but then, it's a rather short novel and it does focus more on the operations and the chaos of contemporary warfare), and when people are in danger, and the crap hits the fan, you do feel for them -- at least I did. There are a few minor errors that got missed in the editing process, but in general it's a well-written account of the every-day soldiers who are out there fighting the war that's still going on. Applause for you, sir, well done. (Kindle edition)

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read January 15, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Outstanding book, I will admit I started out a little biased as Chris was my Platoon Sergeant at the beginning of my last deployment but as I read on I realized that this book stacks up against any military fiction I have read. A great first effort in what I hope is a long literary career. Good job Chris.

2.0 out of 5 stars Wanted to like it - bored me so much I'm deleting it April 10, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I bought this after reading a favorable review on VFTP. I figured that a rec from Tam was a good bet, as I know she appreciates some of the same authors (Heinlein, El Neil, P.J.) as me and because I've enjoyed many of her recs before.

Alas, not _Proof of Our Resolve_- it's been six weeks now, and I just can't get into it. I usually blast through books, but I've only got this one 34% read (I just keep plugging away at it, hoping that it gets interesting), and I can't really find the story. It's to the point now where I just dread opening the thing on the bus ride home. To me, _Proof of Our Resove_ is boring. Nothing happens. Driving around in the desert with no apparent sense of purpose - attacks happen, people respond, talk on the radio, swear a lot, shoot. You learn very little about the characters - so I don't CARE about them. What's the point? I'm 1/3 of the way through it, and I couldn't even begin to tell you. Yawn. I don't care about the plot or any of the characters - I find myself clicking off the book and pulling up the WSJ to see if there were any articles I missed that morning. I almost bought _Shogun_ on the Kindle last night just to have a _story_ to read.

I know I'm odd man out here. Other reviewers talk about how this captures the essence of Afghanistan, so obviously it speaks to some folks - a LOT of folks. I really dislike putting up a negative review of a new author's work and I ordinarily would just keep my mouth shut (click on my other reviews to see how few negative ones I do), but here's why I feel I need to do so: when I clicked over from VFTP upon reading Tam's review, EVERY single review here was terrific. They still are - ALL four- and five-star reviews.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great dialogue
This book has excellent, realistic, and gritty dialogue. War is an abstract concept until it becomes a story. Proof of our resolve is a war story that will captivate and inform.
