Book Description

0465087507 978-0465087501 June 1971

First published in the early 1970s, Tree of Hate is Philip Powell's exploration of "the Black Legend"--the popular myth that colonial Spain and her military and religious agents were brutal and unrelenting in their conquest of the Americas.

"Powell seeks not merely to trace the origins of what he calls Hispanophobia but to analyze its impact on American education, textbooks, religion, and especially foreign policy. . . . The evidence easily demonstrates that English-speaking scholars and diplomats speak with a biased tongue. . . . Too many critics of Spain, to use Powell's central theme, have merely erected a 'Tree of Hate' out of ignorance or to justify their own prejudices and activities. . . . Powell's book deserves careful reading."--Journal of American History

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent source for those interested in prejudices affecting Hispanics in the US, July 28, 2005
This review is from: Tree of Hate; Propaganda and Prejudices Affecting United States Relations With the Hispanic World. (Hardcover)
An excellant starting point for anyone interested in learning about the "Spanish Black Legend." I first encountered this book during my studies at the University of Michigan. Having experienced first-hand many of the stereo-types discussed in the book, it was extremely helpful in healing many old wounds. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Spanish culture and/or anyone of Hispanic origin.

--Extremely enlightening

5.0 out of 5 stars Tree of Hate - Powell's book deserves careful reading., February 27, 2011

This is a well researched book about a subject matter not discussed in our schools, universities, and media. Mr. Powell begins with the definition of the Black Legend and the early origins of Hispanophobia in Europe, England, and eventually the United States. Unfortunately, most English-speaking scholars, teachers, pundits, and diplomats speak with a highly venomous biased tongue against Spain and other Roman Catholic nations. The long litany of sheer calumnies that the English (and Dutch) have fabricated throughout the centuries is shocking and despicable. The English and Dutch are definitely the mothers of modern European political propaganda; however, the Black Legend was not just an attack based on politics and religious conflict, but an all out bigoted assault on the character of a people. The "Tree of Hate" is an excellent book based on historical facts from a variety of sources. I highly recommend this book as a first step in becoming aware of the Black Legend and its impact on contemporary society and media.
