5.0 out of 5 stars this is an amazing cure
I was introduced to this book from a friend of myne. She was very pleased with all the good outcomes she recieved from the book, and thought i might enjoy it too. I had auto-immune hepatitis in my liver, an enlargened spleen, depression, and i was struggling with an eating disorder for 5 years by that time. I was at a very low point. When I read this book, I felt it would be worth a shot to try. I felt wonderul, even after the first week. I had so much energy, and actually wanted to go out and do things. I looked a lot healthier, and felt it too. This book has done amazing things for me, and I plan on continuing with this way of life as long as I live. I am the happiest now I have ever been. I think i should add, I used to have to go to my doctor and special doctors to get treated and keep track of my liver, but now, my liver is back to the healthy state it used to be. My doctor even told me there was no need to continue on my medication, and that my body was taking care of itself just fine now. That was a huge relief and happiness for me.

2.0 out of 5 stars Get For the Food Chart, March 25, 2009
By
This review is from: Proper Food Combining Works: Living Testimony (Paperback)
A co-worker gave me a copy of this book. I will admit, the premise of food combining makes sense. Different types of food digest differently so, if you plan meals that only include foods that digest the same way, it is easier on the digestive system. If you combine foods that do not digest the same way, your system will digest one type first while the others wait in line to "putrefy" (sounds terrible). Improper food combining causes digestive problems that, I guess, leads to the nasty stuff that comes out of your system with colon cleansers (gross). Eating the same types of foods at the same time goes back to prehistoric times when hunters and gatherers will just have berries to eat or meat. I would think the human digestive system would evolve from those times to digest complicated food combinations, but what do I know.

It seems to me that, instead of counting calories, with this diet, you count hours. Certain types of foods digest at certain rates, and you should not eat anything until the appropriate time elapses. Fruits are in different categories and you cannot combine different categories of fruit. They take between 2-3 hours to digest. Proteins take 12 hours, so it is best to eat them for your last meal of the day. Unlike some diets, you are not encouraged to snack with food combining because that messes up your digestion cycle. You also should not drink with meals (even water). You drink water throughout the day at room temperature (anything too hot or cold is bad for the digestive system). For me, it is very difficult to follow and kind of saps the fun out of eating but, if it helps people who have medical problems, more power to it.

The best part about this book is that it includes a chart that explains which foods combine well and how long you should wait for digestion. The reason I am giving this book a 2-star rating though is for its organization (or lack thereof) and very arrogant, high & mighty tone. This book has been out since 1987. One would think it would be edited and cleaned up several times by now. Still, there are spelling mistakes and the organization is terrible. There is sometimes no rhyme or reason why some bits of information are found where they are. It skips around to different things and it's hard to find information even though it is a short book. One time, I wanted to find a paragraph about not eating when you have a fever. "Starve a fever" is an old wives tale from Medieval times that, I admit, I (and, apparently, Lee DuBelle) subscribe to mostly because of my fear of vomiting. A co-worker told me that was the wrong thing to do, so I wanted to show him the passage in the book that advised it, and it took me forever to find it. The author's "I'm right and everyone who doesn't follow my guidelines is wrong" tone also gets on my nerves. There was one paragraph that discussed a pilot who was very ill and the doctor gave him only a few months to live. The pilot started food combining and got better while the doctor "didn't change his ways" and died within six months. Why did he die? Was it a digestion problem? It doesn't say. How can she assume that it was because he didn't practice proper food combining? That line really rubbed me the wrong way. Also, scare tactics like, only drink distilled water because tap water "can kill you" is an exaggerated generalization that is probably not true for most of us.

The benefit of this book is the food charts that make up, if I remember correctly, 3 pages of the book. Anyone interested in food combining will do best just copying those pages. The book is inexpensive which is a plus, but I'm sure there are other food combining books that are better organized and more useful information such as recipes or more meal ideas. There are lots of schools of thought regarding healthy eating habits. There are many people who have lived to be 100 and in good health who never followed the strict guidelines in a book like this. Sure, it can help people, but to make it out like it's the only way is not going to endear me to a book.
