3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but lacks poetic force of Paul Sparer reading
I bought this CD, thinking I was buying a digital version of the highly poetic reading of Kahlil Gibran's "The Prophet," read by Paul Sparer, produced by Random House in 1996.

My mistake. The Richard Harris recording is pretty good, though it lacks the poetic force of the Sparer reading.

Richard Harris' recording sounds (not surprisingly,...

I stumbled on this album on cassette in my college days. As it combined one of my favorite books with one of my favorite performers, (Richard Harris is, to me the quintessential "King Arthur", before "Dances With Wolves" he was, "A Man Called Horse", & how inscrutably charming is his "Prof. Albus Dumbledore?" -- Merlin must be proud!) I took it home & soon played it often. So much that I've gone through at least 3 copies on cassette. I no longer dared hope to find it on CD since most sources don't even list it at all, I'm ECSTATIC! To describe the music is not my forte, but I can tell you the music & spoken elements combine in a way that soothes while also challenging the heart & soul! The only drawback is that this is an abridged presentation,so some beautiful parts aren't there, but what is is sublime! Go Get It!

5.0 out of 5 stars VERY moving, September 4, 2005
This review is from: Prophet: Kahlil Gibran (Audio CD)
Many years ago this was my introduction to The Prophet, and it brought me to tears. The musical score and Harris's reading bring Gibran's incredible metaphors to life. When I feel like dipping into a spiritual calm, nothing works for me like this CD. I have given out several as presents. As another reviewer mentioned, this was produced quite a while ago, so don't expect contemporary style, but it works. If you have read the passage which begins "Life is indeed darkness," wait until you hear what Harris does with it!

And it brought the audience to tears. Richard Harris doing a spoken
word "dramatic interpretation" of The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran. Does
it work? Yes, in a big way. This recording dates back to the 70's so
the orchestration may come across a bit dated, but having this
available on CD is a real find. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!!, July 1, 2004
This review is from: Prophet: Kahlil Gibran (Audio CD)
I am a 15 year old that loves poetry. The cd is one of the greatest things that I have EVER heard! This whole album is totally amazing. Kahlil Gibran wrote beautifully, the music that is composed is perfect and Richard Harris' voice and way of speaking captures the essence that Gibran would have been proud of. Very well done. Worth 10,000 stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible and Magical, December 12, 2008
This review is from: Prophet: Kahlil Gibran (Audio CD)
About 25 years ago a friend gave me this Richard Harris reading of The Prophet as a vinyl album. I typically do not care for a mixture of music and poetry reading, but this was different. This was amazing, incredibly beautiful. What's even more remarkable is this is the type of work that you can listen to over and over and it only gets richer, more intense, more moving. I cannot think of any other work of art that affects me that way, with the possible exception of some great classical music and opera productions.

My vinyl album has long ago lost it's sound quality, so I went to [...] to see if they had this work. They did not. They had two other narrators reciting The Prophet, and I sampled both of them at the Audible site. Oh my gosh, what a difference. Compared to Richard Harris, those narrators sounded like they had no clue what they were reading. They were simply speaking words with banal professionalism.

About 2 years ago I came here to Amazon to see if they had the Harris recording, and they did not. Not expecting any better luck, I came to Amazon today and found this CD. I am elated and inspired to write this review.

I can tell you this: If you love art, if you love poetry, if you can be moved by incredible beauty, if you treasure discussions of God, creation, the self and philosophy, get this album. As one or two other reviewers said, you will be deeply affected.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Prophet by Richard Harris, July 12, 2008
This review is from: Prophet: Kahlil Gibran (Audio CD)
The audio version of Kalil Gibran's "The Prophet" (read by the late, great Richard Harris) has been a favorite of mine through years past, and it continues to be my favorite inspirational audio cd above many. I boldly quote passages from it, and it is not unusual to hear me singing snatches from the medley on 'love' and 'children' and 'marriage.'
I first discovered the prophet many, many years ago after the President of my country died and the radio station was playing this thing. It blew me over gently and I bought the LP.
Since then I have grown into saying to people, "You do not need to go to church to understand how to live this life; just listen to "The Prophet."
I have gone on Amazon more than once and have bought copies of "The Prophet" and have had them delivered to people I care about---people with life issues---people not at ease with everyday life.
This is an exellent bit of work, and I'm damn happy that it's still available on Amazon.
Many have said to me, "Harold...you have a good heart." This compliment comes to me often. Why? Because through the words of Kalil Gibran (and out of the mouth of Richard Harris), I practice 'giving'...I give so that I might live. This audio work, has changed my life.
Get it; it may change yours also.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something Remembered, April 28, 2008

This review is from: Prophet: Kahlil Gibran (Audio CD)
I remembered hearing The Prophet being played by my mother in the house many times in Jamaica W.I,by the way i was born in Jamaica W.I on December 23, 1970 and The Prophet came out i think in 1974(knowing my mother she stills has the album somewhere). But as kids i did not understand what it meant hearing the music and the spoken words together or why our mother loved listening to it, but for some strange reason years later i would always remember hearing the strange music with the man talking over it. Not knowing the name of the album or the person speaking i asked my older brother about 2 to 3 weeks ago if he remembered hearing our mother playing some strange music when we were kinds and to my surprise he knew it. Just thought that i would share that.
Thanks.

Many years ago, my search for answers to the questions I had about life, the universe and all in between, lead me to be sitting in the front room of a friend's house, listening to Richard Harris perform with a variety of muscians. We were listening to 'The Prophet'. Hearing this body of work, lead me to explore the teachings of Kahlil Gibran. The messages within 'The Prophet' are very loving and profound. It speaks of a 'right of passage'for mankind. I dare anyone not to get some good messages about life from this CD. So,if you are out there and you are searching for some answers, buy this CD. Now, I have heard other versions of this Kahlil Gibran's work and strongly feel that no one but no one does such a wonderful job of delivering this largely narrative/very mildly rock opera like Richard Harris. His brilliance in acting a delivery makes this recording stand out. Being a music buff as I am, I feel slightly let down by the engineering of this CD. Please don't let this stop you from buying the CD. At times the placement of the background instruments is a little too strong. Never the less, it's slight engineering faults are easily over looked when you take the journey back to 1974 (and much later... to Almustafa, the chosen and beloved, the coming of the ship, the people of Orphalese and the messages of love and wisdom)
