Editorial Reviews

Like most of us, Brent Knopf watches a lot of YouTube videos, only he's not watching kittens playing piano. Rather, his tastes err on the more experimental side of things-- like people who attempt perpetual motion machines using magnets. ''I love that they're trying to harness an endless supply of energy,'' says the Ramona Falls frontman, ''and that they go against conventional wisdom in the hopes of true discovery.'' Which is exactly what Knopf did last year, when he decided to quit the acclaimed art rock trio Menomena and devote his time to one epic, personal vision. ''False freedom is the ratification of pre-rigged choices,'' the musician paraphrases the philosopher Noam Chomsky, ''while true freedom is the agency to shape the choices themselves.'' But as Knopf is learning now with a full-time focus on a former side project, freedom comes with greater risk. Prophet, the second Ramona Falls album, is sonically, lyrically and thematically brighter. It's also more organic and personal than anything he ever contributed to Menomena, or as the singer/multi-instrumentalist explains, ''it's more of a rapid transit line between my sleeve and my heart.''

5.0 out of 5 stars Brent, you are one rad musician. May 2, 2012

Prophet is a great, diverse album. I am a huge fan of Menomena and was really disappointed when Brent Knopf quit the band. But this album proves that he knows what he's doing. Out of the 11 songs, there isn't a dud. And like his first album, there are catchy hooks and deep layering that keep us listening to this on constant repeat without getting bored. My favorite tracks are Archimedes Plutonium, Brevony, Spore, and Proof. Keep it up, Ramona Falls!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! May 1, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
Prophet is an amazing follow up to Intuit with a great mix of high energy fuzzed out rockers and more emotionally earnest slow burners. Highlights for me are Divide By Zero, Spore, Proof, Brevony, and Sqworm. Definitely worth a few listens, as it grows in depth with every spin. I love it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Grown on me October 6, 2012

As a big fan of Menomena, Brent Knopf's other band, I had to give this album a try. It took a couple of listens, but this album has really grown on me. I have since listened to Intuit, Ramona Falls first album, but I still like this one better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sophomore skyrocket! May 10, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
Well, there's certainly no sophomore slump for Portland's Ramona Falls. Of course, it's a vastly different album than Intuit, but it's possible that this album is better. If you're familiar with Ramona Falls but have yet to hear Prophet, then know that Ramona Falls is still Ramona Falls. They've just grown a bit. Gone are the fun times from "Always Right," that sound as if it's being performed by claymation dolls in a Tim Burton movie. Now we have a more mature sound, and it is very good! High points for me are "Spore," "Divide by Zero," "Archimedes Plutonium," "If i Equals u," and a track you can't get on Amazon. On that note... it's not as if I'd ever encourage anyone to buy something somewhere else when doing a review on Amazon. But, if you happen to buy the album directly from Ramona Falls, you happen to get a bonus track, "Bveloed," which is among the best from the album.

If you're unfamiliar with Ramona Falls, just check out the 30 second clips. They don't really do it justice, but it's better than nothing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prophet says "Must Wear Headphones for Full Effect" September 27, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
Of Menomena's trio (now duo), ex-band member Brent Knopf is/was the astral wonder mental man that put the ever-changing atmosphere's in their albums. He's now flown from that band and landed back on his perch at Ramona Falls. There he can explore his highly musical imagination in private and record his rambling visions. As you may have already sampled from other media providing sites his songs, I must insist on purchasing the full HQ mp3 files by clicking the little button at the top right of this page to begin one of the most satisfying music purchases you'll ever make. Plus it's only fair to him. Afterward dig out or purchase a nice set of headphones (this a great place for that as well), launch your mp3 player and experience Brent's brain in it full musical capacity. Listening to his music through mere free standing speakers doesn't provide the experience he's intended for you. The instruments and sounds dance from ear to ear as a wonderful rhythmic common ground is centered and many times has you tapping your feet to it. My favorite song 'Brevony' is the perfect example of his music genius, the song is like floating broken pieces of instruments playing their sounds and somewhat together yet apart, the guitar intentionally forcing amplifier feedback, an almost out of place keyboard playing what seems like a piano teaching exercise, but just as one might think he's losing his mind he throws everything together and blasts with perfect rock rhythm and sound in 4/4 time that even the Foo Fighters could appreciate. It's only for a few seconds then the song ends. The pieces merged and became a solid which fulfilled my experience of the song like a nice desert. It's that suspense he creates that makes his songs so satisfying and genius.... Read more ›

4.0 out of 5 stars More listenable over time August 15, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Quite a good collection of songs. More electronic than I prefer, but the songwriting is very tight. Many of the songs could end earlier and be fine, but the compositions are complex and the richness appears as the songs extend. The more I listen to it, the better I like it. From my perspective, that's a good sign.
