It Haunts Me... ....In A Good Way,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Prophetess: A Novel (Hardcover)
I casually picked this book up from the library a number of years ago and was immediately interested in the story. I read it cover to cover and then returned it to the library. I had since forgotten the title and author of the book, but I was constantly reminded that I had greatly enjoyed reading it. More recently as I have further explored my religious (or non-religious as the case may be) faith, I have been more haunted by the memory of this long lost book I once read. Biting the bullet, I spent a lovely bit of time reading over the titles under the keywords "egypt" and "fiction" from the same library. I finally came across the right title and my mind truly cleared. This was the mystery book. Now that my search is over, I have my very own copy of this treasure so that I will not let it fade from me again.

A great find!,

This review is from: The Prophetess (Mass Market Paperback)
This book was recommended to me by a friend and I wish I had read it sooner! I enjoyed all aspects of the book, the digs, the biblical referencing and the interpertations of the scrolls! I wasn't too keen on the computer jargon, but you didn't need to be a computer wiz to understand the jest of it. It was well written and obviously well researched! Being it was recommended to me, I therefore would recommend it anyone who enjoys a cat and mouse chase! (no pun intended) Also, just for the historical and bibllical aspect, if nothing else. I was intriqued by Catherine and her strong will to vindicate her mother and what her mother stood for. It's a fast read and a real page turner!

This review is from: The Prophetess: A Novel (Hardcover)
I borrowed this book from a library, it seemed like it might be interesting, so I gave it 30 pages. 130 pages later, I had lunch. Since it was my day off, I had the luxury of finishing this book after dinner.
So...it is a great "page turner". But more that that, it makes you think very hard about what religion is all about. The story is that of an archaeologist who discovers some ancient scrolls giving new light on the origins of Christianity. The scrolls tells of an "early Christian era" woman's search for the Redeemer, the importance of women in early Christianity, and what she learned on her journey. The tale of the archaeologist, and her friends, and their efforts to bring the scrolls to light is riveting, fast-paced, and compelling. I hope that I do not demean either author, but, I could not help noticing the similarity with the Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown. Both authors have recognized the importance of women in church history. They also both recognize the importance of Mary Magdalene. Last comment....this is a book that gives me faith...I think that that is a good thing.

I could not put this book down!,
This review is from: The Prophetess (Mass Market Paperback)
I discovered this book a few weeks ago, when someone asked me if my favorite author, Katherine Neville, also writes as Barbara Wood. It turned out not to be the case, but I discovered that Barbara Wood is also an excellent writer; I will definitely read more of her books. I especially liked The Prophetess because of the wonderful characters, the insights on women in ancient times, and the use of the Internet. The plot is very exciting; I could not put the book down!

An edge-of-your-seat suspense novel!,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Prophetess (Mass Market Paperback)
This was the first Barbara Wood book that I've ever read, and I found it very enjoyable. In fact, I liked it enough to be interested in reading some of her other novels. I found the book very intense in some scenes, and over all, very exciting. I couldn't put it down! The plot was very good and was written at a nice pace, not too fast, not to slow. I can't remember a truly boring part of this novel. Although I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, I thought that some of it was just too much, like the maze and Atlantis Island part. I found that Vegas scene totally stupid and silly, but still, I liked the book. I do recommend this book, but keep in mind, it is only entertainment. It isn't meant to change your faith.

This review is from: The Prophetess (Bookcassette(r) Edition) (Audio Cassette)
The plausability of the story could be questionable before it is read, but the Biblical history was well done. Also the futuristic computer technology worked well. I am now anxious for the paperback so I can afford a copy for every reader I know. This title was recommended to me by a high school boy,and I have discussed it with two additional generations that also enjoyed it. It dealt well with several tough topics(ie. celebate priests and church interventions of the secular world) but it was done tactfully

What does faith mean to you?,
This review is from: The Prophetess (Mass Market Paperback)
A suspenseful novel, impossible to put down. But this is more than a story about an archeologist and her amazing discovery. What makes this book so unique is the profound message of the scrolls. For those who are open to spiritual possibility, Sabina's quest of the Righteous One is the real story here. Barbara Wood did a good job building personal discovery within a setting of material discovery.

A Profound Read,
By
This review is from: The Prophetess (Mass Market Paperback)
The Prophetess tackles a deep and fascinating subject. Although it is somewhat outdated now that we have already crossed the Y2K barrier, it still is a wonderful read. Archaeoligist Catherine Alexander makes a startling discovery of some ancient scrolls in Egypt which hold manifold secrets that can change the world. With the millennial Zeitgeist at full throttle, the scrolls hold a pertinent message about the world on the threshold of the 21st century. Many greedy parties are after these valuable scrolls, and Catherine is in a race against time and the people after her as she spans continents in search of the secret of the scrolls. The book has an exciting sequence of events and a powerful climax. A great book!

The Prophetess is profound,
By
This review is from: The Prophetess (Mass Market Paperback)
On the eve of the Millennium, Dr. Alexander unearths a cache ofscrolls which reveal a hidden religious history that governments, millionaires & the clergy will stop at nothing to suppress. From the beginning Barbara Wood has created a fast-paced, absorbing read, with some strange perspectives, her heroine a bit of an innocent & some rather nasty, unlikely foes. I found Barbara Wood's idea of a prophetess with that kind of information & pedigree, stimulating; her facts & fiction, fascinating. A super read! ...
