4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good period drama, August 17, 2002
This review is from: Proposition [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I only took this video out because of my compulsion to come up with double features. In this case the title alone was the raison d'etre. I watched it back to back with The Proposition starring Madeleine Stowe, a completely different movie in both storyline and setting.
This story is set in Wales in the 19th century (I think). Theresa Russell (a favorite since Black Widow) is a lady with land and title, but in debt since her husband passed on. She and her family are turned out of house and home and her only hope is to make a cattle drive across country to make some money.
She meets a roughneck working class fellow whom she asks to lead her cattle drive. This is the proposition. He at first declines but later accepts when he loses his own home in a fire. The two of them are often at loggerheads on their difficult journey and have to deal with ruffians trying to stymie their efforts.
It is typically but satisfyingly bittersweet period drama and romance.
