Editorial Reviews

This nine-member group from Detroit is widely considered one of the funkiest bands of all time. This album compiles the original versions remastered, all the collectible 7-inches, and several unreleased tracks. The Propositions were influenced by Funkadelic, Earth Wind & Fire, Sly Stone, and local predecessors, The Fabulous Counts. They created their own style by taking a dedicated instrumental direction and abandoning vocalization. The result is a tasty combo of funky drums, wah-wah guitar, and a full horn section.

First of all, this is all instrumentals, except for I believe, 1 track- Thought people should know, if like me, you feel funk/soul should include VOCALS !
Where anyone gets any reference to Hendrix, I have zero idea-
As far as musicianship, I'd say it's ok, nothing great- And I'm fine w/ 'raw' stuff, I have a bunch-
Sorry, no vocals + mediocre playing, is a no-go for me-
Try Street Sounds From the Bay Area: Music City Funk & Soul Grooves 1971-75 instead- It has almost 1/2 instrumentals (yuck), and it's various artists- It's also raw- Great though-
Or try Pose a Question Really killer-

I just wanted to 2nd that other review. The sound quality is occasionally less than perfect, but you won't care.

The other Hendrix analogy is apt, and the sound is similar but the guitar has more groove to it, not so slashing. This also sounds like it has some Sly & the Family Stone (Stand!) influence, particularly on the bass and drums. So if you'd like something that sounds like Sly Stone got together with Hendrix and the JB horns (who wouldn't?) , dig it!

Years and years ago, mid 90s, I had the good, no, maraculous fortune, of walking into a Greenwich Village record shop while this band was on the CD player. Who knows when or if I would have otherwise gotten hip to the Propositions. For some reason, these guys are only known to hardcore funk collectors, and it is really a shame

This is out and out Hendrix influenced 70s funk. Wha Whas, organ and driving bass. Except for the guitar effects, this music is stripped down and hard. It does not have the decoration of, say, Funkadelic or the Ohio players. Yet it is a lot more polished and cosmopolitan than Stax.

But if a little kid or a space creature asked me what funk was, I would probably play them this. It is the type of funk you may have heard on a TV station during technical difficulties in, say, 1974, hidden so deep in your mind you wonder if this type of music actually ever exsisted.

Well it absolutely did, and this is a classic slice of it. You can define the genre by hearing this.

And you wanna know the kicker: these guys were about 14 years old when they made this music, but this band is has tight and as professional as any funk band i ever heard.

If you have even the most remote interest in this type of music, you HAVE to own this.

This group should have gone far. This is a double CD with some of the music being what sounds like outtakes and alternate versions. You've Been Chose is what caught my attention and I thoroughly enjoy the other songs.
