Rather elementary and abstract - but also thought-provoking.,
By Anthony (Vancouver, BC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Prospect - Mapping Out Your Future (Paperback)
Prospect - Mapping Out Your Future is Sayling Wen's opinion of what it takes to succeed in the world of work, and in life in general.
Targeted mainly at younger persons embarking on their careers; I found the book rather elementary and abstract. For example his chapter 4 - The Right Outlook on Life ends with "One has to first develop the right view towards life, and then adopt a balanced approach toward determining his future direction. Without the right view towards life, one will find it difficult to determine his future path, and his life may very well end up a mess." (p.-19) However Wen doesn't clearly define what the "right view" might consist of. Wen illustrates his points with some examples from his career as an engineer and manager in IT manufacturing in Taiwan (do a web-search of his name for a bio). He does discuss, through short passages of text and cartoons, how humans have evolved to work in cooperative teams, and how this behavior still works within companies. Wen also has some good advice for business managers, and those considering leaving the employ of a company to start their own enterprise. Overall there were some thought-provoking passages, and I'd have to say that reading this short book was worth my while.
