Editorial Reviews

Review

A charming novel!  Michel writes with intelligence, humor, and grace about the tricky terrain of marriage. The novel is both insightful and very entertaining.” — Ellen Sussman, author of French Lessons

“A richly detailed comedy of modern manners and the ways in which we complicate or own lives.” — Claire Cook, author of Must Love Dogs and Wallflower in Bloom

“Bad behavior, in the hands of a clever novelist, is one of the great pleasures of fiction, and Deborah Michel’s modern day Angelenos are the most satisfying of rakes, snobs and odious in-laws…a social observer of Trollopian gifts." — Jean Hanff Korelitz, author of Admission

This is absolutely the most delightful book. The description on Amazon attracted me for a fun, light read, but it's so much smarter than I was expecting. This writer really gets how tricky marriage is. I hope somebody bought the movie rights...I would love to see it on the big screen.

Absorbing and witty, intelligent and keen-eyed, Prosper In Love pays tribute to the old master observers of love and life, like Trollope and Austen, yet maintains a fresh and modern eye on the vagaries of marriage and family ties. Characters to love, hate and feel for (often all at once), a true-to-life situation, a smooth and lively prose--this isn't just a fun read (though it is that!), but a thoughtful read. Go get it!

I really loved this book. It has a light touch, but the book is not light weight, but elegantly presented with fully fleshed out characters. It is so visual it feels like a film. I hope, if it is made into one, they don't lose Ms. Michel's sense of humor and pathos.
Marriage is a tricky art, and as novelists in the previous century managed to present, this 20th center version of complex relationships, and hard to understand personal conflicts, comes off with us knowing her characters and caring about them. We want this to sort out, and indeed since we have to read it as fast as we can, as we need to know NOW how it sorts out, we really care about outcome. This is masterfully crafted with all the right tensions for a first time novel. Great read.

A must-read for anyone who is married, used to be married or wants to be married. Full of "aha" moments -- leavened by a wicked sense of humor -- Prosper in Love reminds me of those great old screwball comedies of the thirties, with their witty dialogue, endearing lead characters, and expertly orchestrated hijinks. You won't be disappointed!

An elegant comedy of manners. I really enjoyed this novel and can echo other reviewers in that it was so much more than I expected from the "chick lit" label I saw in some reviews. The characters were so believable - shown and not told. Michel's manages to explore the many facets of marriage in a subtle yet compelling read.

Look no further! Here's your summer read -- the story of the marriage and divorce (?) of the Prospers of Los Angeles. Jamie, a real estate lawyer and Lynn, a museum curator, seem to have the simpatico of soulmates, a bond that can't be broken until... But I'll leave the details for you to discover -- believe me, they're worth the trip.

Suffice it to say, this is a wonderful read that portrays the first years of marriage -- the adjustments, jockeying, egos, interfering families, and those little moments of love -- with such honesty and intimacy that you will smile, shed a tear, and want to desperately slap a couple of the characters upside the head.

"And I'll never say I hate you again."
He grinned.
"Okay, but I'll try."

If that is an exchange you've never had in some form or another, you probably haven't ever been married.

How to describe this novel? It kind of breaks the mold of chick lit and expands the definition. Prosper in Love isn't in any way predictable-- it's a page-turner. It's school of Jennifer Weiner and smarter than Emily Giffin. And the sweeteners are that the author, Deborah Michel, a journalist, also serves up Los Angeles and the art world with a carefully observed depiction of their characters and ecology that is as captivating as wondering whatever will happen to Jamie and Lynn. The only problem? I want the next book from Michel. Oh, and how about a sequel, please?
