WHAT IS NEW, SPECIAL FEATURES

An educational vehicle for the patient-to-be (that is, all men age 35-40+) as well as for the man already diagnosed with prostate cancer...and for his wife or partner. The purpose: to induce men to assume a more active and aggressive responsibility for monitoring their own prostate health. After the Chronology of Events related to prostate cancer discoveries and treatments throughout history, Dr. Vilas discusses multiples statistics that enlighten men on how to approach and what to expect from their medical care specialists and HMOs, and how to keep their own medical records. Then, he identifies symptoms, from urinary difficulties (frequency, intermittency, urgency, weak-stream, dribbling, disuria, etc.) to sexual dysfunction; he explains positive tests indicative of cancer and then he details the main treatments available, from "Doing Nothing" to hormonal therapy to surgery to radiation and to the latest development, the daVinci Robotic Radical Prostatectomy. Statistical explanations of PSA tests, biopsy, and staging of the cancer give the reader a wide spectrum of knowledge to be able to interpret tests and doctors' reports; the man learns when and how to request which tests and why. The last sections include a Glossary, a list of remarkable educational websites, and an Index.

In the U.S.A. alone, 234,460 new cases of prostate cancer are being diagnosed in 2006, and 27,350 more men will die from this disease. Yet most men have no knowledge, or very limited, of prostate misbehavior. Additionally, many men, when diagnosed, complain that they do not receive enough information from their medical professionals and that they cannot respond intelligently when asked to make treatment decisions -as asserted by the over 100 patients from seven countries personally interviewed by the author.

In spite of the hundreds of books written on prostate cancer, Prostate Cancer is Curable has been labeled "unique" because it fills in the gap: it analyzes from the patient's perspective how to identify symptoms, how to interact with the doctors, how to ascertain that his HMO covers the prostate cancer treatment of his choice, how to determine which treatment is best for the life-style he wishes to preserve and the side effects (mainly incontinence and impotence) he would not like to assume. Statistical analyses are inserted to illustrate and make easier to understand precisely the concepts being commented.

The content and the aggressive style are combined in a manner quite different from what most traditional writings offer. The author emphasizes that the prostate is the center of the man's sense of identity (his manhood, his masculinity, his sexuality) and that the risk of inability to perform will impair his emotional being and affect his partner.

The aggressive, provocative style aims at "waking up" the male reader from many years of passiveness and fear when dealing with prostate anomalies. It brings to the man's attention, by contrast, the [opposite] attitude displayed by women when addressing a similar malignancy, breast cancer. As the author emphasized in a recent interview granted to the national magazine "Humana, Active Outlook", "Early detection through regular testing and screenings can avoid the need for drastic procedures that can cause permanent urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction." The author devotes particular attention to African American men, whose prostate cancer incidence is 50% higher than Whites and whose mortality is 100% higher than Whites, as well as to those with a family history of prostate cancer. He elaborates on studios showing alarming results, for example: At age 50, men have 50% probability of developing prostate cancer; at 60, 60%; + with 1 relative diagnosed with prostate cancer, twice the risk; with 3 diagnosed relatives, five times the risk; if black, an additional 35%-50% risk; and if obese, another 30% higher risk.

Also, this is the first book paying a graphic tribute of gratitude to the eminent specialists who discovered or perfected advances to diagnose and to cure prostate cancer, such as, chronologically, Drs. Young, Huggins, Whitmore, Walsh, Watanabe, Bagshaw, Gleason, Holm, Chu, Catalona, Partin, Ragde, Blasko, Critz and others.

More About the Author

Santiago Vilas y Gil, Ph.D., author of "Prostate Cancer is Curable", was born in the Northwest region of Spain, Galicia, in the city of Vigo. Here, he says, "is where the Atlantic Ocean displays its indomitable fury, where the eucalyptus perfumes the salty air and shutters with its thin verticality the horizontal line of the enigmatic sea".

He grew up among writers, poets, physicians, painters and church hierarchy. After a first degree in Business Administration, he completed Journalism in Madrid and was a professional journalist for over ten years. In his mid-twenties, he became one of the youngest journalists to substitute editing a daily newspaper and to anchor the newscast of a radio station. He was a correspondent of dailies and literary magazines of Madrid and Barcelona, edited the professional magazine of the association of corporate managers, and reported news to Reuters and Associated Press. He authored numerous articles, and interviewed and published studies on prominent personalities of Literature, Medicine, Philosophy, and Art.

Still under the dictatorship and censorship of Franco, he left Spain for the U.S.A., initially as a press correspondent; he then completed a Master's and a Doctor of Philosophy degrees, and he was on the faculty of universities in North Carolina and Louisiana, and he lectured at universities in Georgia, Tennessee and Texas. He has also lectured and directed Summer Schools in Mexico and Madrid, and he was invited Special Lecturer by the University of Mediterranean Studies, Rome, Italy. He has served as Advisor to and Panelist of the National Endowment for the Humanities, in Washington, D.C. In 1997, he was invited to lead a delegation of American educators to China to meet with top administrators and faculty of the main universities and make recommendations for curriculum and procedural improvements.

Among others, he has authored the books "El Humor y la Novela Española Contemporánea" (Humor and the Spanish Contemporary Novel), where he formulates "Humorism" as a philosophy of living (Editorial Guadarrama, Madrid, Spain); "España: Cultura y Civilización" (Spain: Culture and Civilization), a college textbook (Prentice Hall, New Jersey); and "Tres Sombreros de Copa" (Three Top Hats), a college edition of Spain's masterpiece of the "Theater of the Absurd" written by Miguel Mihura. He has also contributed to the book "Medicina Mágica en Galicia" (Magic Medicine in Galicia), investigating the unknown, by physician Dr. José Zunzunegui (Tipografía Faro, Spain).

Elected a member of the academic honor societies Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Delta Pi and Phi Sigma Iota, he was voted International President of the 31,000-member Phi Sigma Iota (1978-1980) and he was later appointed its Executive Director (1986-2000); he founded its magazine "The Forum", which he edited for several years.

Two years after he underwent left nephrectomy surgery due to a kidney tumor, in 2002 he was diagnosed with prostate cancer: Gleason 4+4=8, PSA 14.6. Treatment selected: brachytherapy, implant of 123 seeds Iodine-125 followed by a seven-week external beam radiation treatment. Four days after the implant he found the opportunity to test his condition by enjoying his favorite pastime and physical exercise, ballroom dance. He emphasized the fast Viennese Waltz (the speed of which is 60 measures per minute x 3 beats per measure = 180 steps per minute) followed by the agile Cha-Cha-Cha (31 measures x 4 beats=124 steps per minute). After the three-hour event, he concluded that, "systems were in very good working order" -what, he added, reaffirmed his contention that, "other than for the conditions described above, his health has been and is excellent"...and still "clocking" in 2011 a PSA of <0.01 ng/ml.
