Book Description

Written by a surviving prostate cancer patient and his urologist, Prostate Cancer: Making Survival Decisions provides not just a physician's overview of the disease, but the compassion, understanding, and frankness of a man who's lived through the experience. From the first symptoms to early diagnosis to life after treatment, journalist Sylvan Meyer details every facet of the disease from the patient's point of view. Along with a clear, complete guide to the latest treatments, techniques, and findings, Meyer outlines the tough decisions the patient will face; describes what it's like to go through all the tests, the treatment, and the recovery; and provides an understanding of how the patient himself can affect the outcome.

Thoroughly researched and imbued with great sensitivity, Prostate Cancer: Making Survival Decisions is the most informative and illuminating book about prostate cancer available. Not just an indispensable tool for those who have been diagnosed or are at risk, this is an important guide for anyone who seeks a better understanding of this enigmatic disease and the controversies surrounding it.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Each of us likely knows a man who has died of prostate cancer (PCa). The prostate, a walnut-sized gland deep in the male pelvic cavity, "causes more misery for men than just about any other structure in the body." Like many diseases, PCa dehumanizes, attacking dignity and privacy. Diagnosis is often sudden and prognosis uncertain. Martin, a professor of sociology, and Meyer, a newspaper editor writing with his urologist, are both members of the PCa brotherhood who have the contacts and wherewithal to seek out the best treatment from the medical establishment. The authors each give a demystifying case history of their own illness, from diagnosis through multiple therapy options. Martin's book is the easier read, but his occasional sophomoric sense of humor and name dropping can be grating. However, Dr. Peter Scardino, a nationally recognized PCa authority, offers a praiseworthy epilog to Martin's book. PCa victims should read both books. If a tight budget precludes the purchase of both, choose Meyer and Nash, who offer better medical coverage by expanding the discussion of this cancer beyond Meyer's own case and by outlining medical options more thoroughly.
