Book Description

February 15, 1998 Quality Medical Home Health Library
This text tells the story of how businessman Allen Salowe drew from his experience in organizing and managing teams to taking charge of his own treatment plan - and his life - and how he triumphed in his battle with prostate cancer. Salowe explains how he utilized his skills as a problem solver, recounting his odyssey to discover the path to healing. There is clear, concise discussion of every phase of the disease, and instructions for how to research it through the Internet. This book offers men and their families a blueprint for finding the best medical care, and for forging an effective treatment plan that should lead to physical and emotional health.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Prostate cancer (PCa) has been gaining attention from increased public awareness, improved testing methods, and the number of prominent men who are identified as PCa survivors (Bob Dole, Sidney Poitier, and Norman Schwarzkopf among many others). In this information-packed addition to the literature, Salowe, a businessman who battled this cancer, emphasizes how each case is unique ("a statistic of one") and how PCa affects the family. Like Michael Korda's Man to Man (LJ 4/15/96) and James Payne's Me Too (LJ 4/15/95), Salowe's work provides a personal account with much valuable medical information explaining the "jargon" of the disease (PSA, DRE, Gleason Grading, cryotherapy, and the confusing array of therapeutic choices). His book is highly recommended for its clearly written explanations and its usefulness as a handbook for educating a newly diagnosed PCa man and his family to the disease's essential facts.?James Swanton, Harlem Hosp. This review is from: Prostate Cancer: Overcoming Denial With Action: A Guide to Screening, Treatment, and Healing (Quality Medical Home Health Library) (Paperback)
My good friend, Allen Salowe, survived prostate cancer and cared enough about others not having to endure what he went through that he took the time to write this excellent overview of a deadly disease and its early detection and treatment. Allen writes in an interesting, easy-to-read, no-nonsense style, so any male over the age of 40 should invest a few hours in learning how to increase his odds against potential death resulting from prostate cancer. Because of Allen's experience and his book, I now have an annual DRE and PSA test. (If you want to know what these are, read the book!) -Bill King
