The Prostitution Prism,
By Penny (New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Prostitution Prism (Paperback)
Gail Pheterson's book should be the first port of call for those seriously interested in understanding the nature of sex work, 'trafficking in women' and human rights. The Prostitution Prism covers a wide range of issues including the 'whore stigma' and how it functions, migration, youth and health programs. If you are new to the term sex work and do not understand the first thing about policy relating to the sex industry and sex workers, The Prostitution Prism will give you the information you need in a clear format. If you are an experienced policy analyst or academic, the book will introduce you to new ways of thinking about debates which too often become bogged down by issues of morality and prejudice. The book includes appendices which provide starting points for research (a questionnaire is included) and action (suggested political alliances between lesbians, sex workers, and 'Wives'). The book, in summary, is a testiment to Gail Pheterson's many years of involvement with 'the prostitution prism' as both an academic and an activist. It would look good on your shelf and you'll never be at a loss for scintilating party conversation again. |
