This survey focuses first on defining prostitution and then on the motivations of prostitutes. In Part II the overall scope of the problem is examined, along with the various subcultures (e.g., street walkers and call girls) and the prevalence of drugs, crime and victimization. Part III covers teenage prostitution and the issues of child sexual abuse. Part IV details other dimensions of the sex trade industry, such as pornography, male prostitutes, customers, laws, and the effects of decriminalization and legalization. Female prostitution outside the United States is discussed in Part V.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Prompted by a World Health Organization report on "dramatic increases in the prostitution of women and girls in virtually every country," the author (The Victimization and Exploitation of Women and Children, McFarland, 1994) examines prostitution here and around the world. Among the topics covered are definitions of female prostitution, types and theories of prostitution, juvenile prostitution, pornography, customers, male prostitutes, AIDS, the role of substance abuse, legal and decriminalization issues, and the worldwide response to prostitution. This is a very readable study, intelligently presented and well supported with an extensive bibliography. Several recent books have examined various facets of prostitution, especially historical views, but there are few comprehensive books on the current problem. A worthwhile purchase for all academic and larger public libraries.?Mary Jane Brustman, SUNY at Albany Libs.
