5.0 out of 5 stars A life time buy
My wife turned me on this. And true to my nature, I did a lot of research before making a purchase. My instructions were to get a big durable cutting board. One that would not slide over the granite counter top. This cutting board weighs about 14 lbs and is 1 1/2" thick.. It isn't going any where. The instructions advise you to put 4 coats of mineral oil (That I...

3.0 out of 5 stars Lovely to look at, but wobbles
I bought this based on a recommendation in "Cook's Illustrated" magazine and season 2011 America's Test Kitchen equipment review video. I like the way it looks, it's a great size and thickness, and handles cutting very well, it has convenient hand-holds to lift and carry it. "Cook's Illustrated" said that the weight of the board kept it in place. My beautiful board,...

3.0 out of 5 stars Lovely to look at, but wobbles, July 29, 2011

I bought this based on a recommendation in "Cook's Illustrated" magazine and season 2011 America's Test Kitchen equipment review video. I like the way it looks, it's a great size and thickness, and handles cutting very well, it has convenient hand-holds to lift and carry it. "Cook's Illustrated" said that the weight of the board kept it in place. My beautiful board, however, is not perfectly flat on either side, so it wobbles. I'm dealing with the problem the same way I have to for my cheaper cutting boards, non-skid pads underneath; not a great solution, but I'm keeping the board anyway. My package arrived crushed, the paper product information band torn off and crumbled laying beside the the board (how did that happen, I wonder). The packing tape was barely adhered to the box. What is happening to Amazon's shipping department, or do I blame a 3rd party...too much to think about, I just want to cut my veggies.

1.0 out of 5 stars Quality issues, October 29, 2011
This review is from: Proteak Teak Cutting Board Rectangle 24-by-18-by-1-1/2-Inch Edge Grain with Hand Grip (Kitchen)
I also received a board with a large crack. Expensive to ship to return. They need to work on quality control.

1.0 out of 5 stars ** Junk Alert ** Cook's Illustrated was Wrong to Recommend This, August 26, 2011

I ordered this board because it was highly recommended by Cook's Illustrated. They must have tested a board that was hand picked for them because the one I received had a crack running the length of the board that was clearly a defect. I'm returning this for a full cash refund. I don't trust that another one would not split over time.

My wife turned me on this. And true to my nature, I did a lot of research before making a purchase. My instructions were to get a big durable cutting board. One that would not slide over the granite counter top. This cutting board weighs about 14 lbs and is 1 1/2" thick.. It isn't going any where. The instructions advise you to put 4 coats of mineral oil (That I bought at Wal-Mart for $1) prior to first use. A over night drying period and testing was under way. Solid, stable surface to work on and with a little care (mineral oil once a month) it will last a life time. Large enough to prepare the evening meal, and stable enough to insure safety with large knives.

I, too, was interested in this because of Cook's Illustrated's review. I didn't order it from Amazon (it can be found cheaper elsewhere online), but the one I got in January 2012 is completely free of defects and seems to be everything that CI said it was. Highly recommended.

Very sturdy, good looking, easily maneuverable. Big enough to accomodate chopped items. It does slide a bit on granite but this is not a big issue.

WOW. This thing is HUGE. Make sure you check the dimensions before buying so it will fit on your counter. No cracks, no wobbling for me. Just a thick, massive, gigantic, manly, yet beautiful cutting board. I'm happy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Teak Cutting Board, January 8, 2012

I was tired of buying inexpensive cutting boards that warped. I read a review in Cooks Illustrated, which I find a very reliable resource for all things cooking related. Just a couple of thoughts: don't forget to treat the cutting board with mineral oil (see company website for details), before using, and upkeep. Also, know that this is a BIG cutting board, and it is heavy. Although it is great to use, and you can cut multiple items at once - sometimes I have to psyche myself up to LIFT it up, carry it to the sink and rinse. Also, I put little rubber stoppers on the bottom four corners to keep it from moving around - I found it would rotate if something didn't keep it in place. My wife thinks it looks too big, but if you cook as much as I do, you want a larger work surface. If not, you might consider something smaller for ease of use, and cleaning.

This is an excellent cutting board that will not unduly dull your knife, is made from teak wood harvested from a sustainable forest, and looks beautiful on your kitchen sideboard. It's also well made and will probably outlive me. Just be forewarned that it's large and a little heavy, which is why it has indentations cut into the sides for easy lifting. Be sure to measure your kitchen (or other) counter before buying, as it does take up a bit of space, and the company makes a smaller version for more limited spaces.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best cutting board ever!, January 4, 2012

This teak board is the best I have seen. Need to use wet paper towel under plastic or acrylic cutting boards when cutting meats but otherwise this board works great for fruits and veggies. Looks great on counter top as well. Get largest size so it can be braced against backsplash. Two inch height aids in moving cut material to cooking surfaces. Other size boards from this company are equally high in quality. Also from renewable teak forests - an added plus!
