Like many others, I purchased this board after seeing the great review on America's Test Kitchen. However, like many of their product reviews, I think the issue is that they don't live with the products day to day for an extended period of time. This cutting board works well for awhile, but will eventually begin falling apart, becoming worthless (and dangerous).

Purchased mine in May of 2012. I followed the care instructions religiously: wiping down with a damp sponge after use, oiling regularly with butcher block oil, and never leaving it wet. However, after 20 months, the board has developed a crack approximately 6" long starting at one end. This is now a great place for bacteria and microbes to hide and breed. In addition, the board now had a pronounced warp/bow to it. The result is that when cutting, the board tends to spin on the countertop. Not the safest thing when trying to chop vegetables with a sharp knife.

I emailed Proteak twice, asking if they would consider covering this under the warranty (which they state as 12 months). I thought that with their website description of the board as "known for its durability and longevity" and "the last cutting board you'll ever need", they would stand behind their product and cover this. However, both emails went completely ignored.

I'd recommend saving your money, and simply purchase a cheap cutting board, since either way they're going to end up in the trash (or the wood stove in my case).

I bought this based on a recommendation in "Cook's Illustrated" magazine and season 2011 America's Test Kitchen equipment review video. I like the way it looks, it's a great size and thickness, and handles cutting very well, it has convenient hand-holds to lift and carry it. "Cook's Illustrated" said that the weight of the board kept it in place. My beautiful board, however, is not perfectly flat on either side, so it wobbles. I'm dealing with the problem the same way I have to for my cheaper cutting boards, non-skid pads underneath; not a great solution, but I'm keeping the board anyway. My package arrived crushed, the paper product information band torn off and crumbled laying beside the the board (how did that happen, I wonder). The packing tape was barely adhered to the box. What is happening to Amazon's shipping department, or do I blame a 3rd party...too much to think about, I just want to cut my veggies.

Two previous reviewers wrote they got cracked boards. Mine was not only cracked, but it was broken down the middle. The packaging was extremely poor! They did not try to package it properly; the board was placed in in big flat box, with nothing to hold it. Their loss percentage has to be high. They need a good dose of quality control!!

This cutting board was recommended by American Test Kitchen. It is expensive for a cutting board, but it's BIG---24x18x1.5 inches [make sure you have sufficient counter space] and it's made from teak wood, which the label says, comes from a sustainable teak plantation located on the Mexican coast. You can use either side of the board for cutting, since it has no legs to limit its use to only one side. And with recessed hand grips on opposite ends of the board, it is easy to flip over, bring to the sink to wash or move to another place in the kitchen. To keep the teak cutting board from splitting or cracking, you should initially rub in a liberal amount of FOOD GRADE mineral oil, which you can buy at any hardware store, and do this several times a year. You should do this for ALL wooden or bamboo cutting boards, not just for this one. I bought this large cutting board because it holds more cut veggies than the average board and for its purported durability [according to American Test Kitchen]. Only time will tell, if it holds up well with [almost] daily use.

My wife turned me on this. And true to my nature, I did a lot of research before making a purchase. My instructions were to get a big durable cutting board. One that would not slide over the granite counter top. This cutting board weighs about 14 lbs and is 1 1/2" thick.. It isn't going any where. The instructions advise you to put 4 coats of mineral oil (That I bought at Wal-Mart for $1) prior to first use. A over night drying period and testing was under way. Solid, stable surface to work on and with a little care (mineral oil once a month) it will last a life time. Large enough to prepare the evening meal, and stable enough to insure safety with large knives.

I was tired of buying inexpensive cutting boards that warped. I read a review in Cooks Illustrated, which I find a very reliable resource for all things cooking related. Just a couple of thoughts: don't forget to treat the cutting board with mineral oil (see company website for details), before using, and upkeep. Also, know that this is a BIG cutting board, and it is heavy. Although it is great to use, and you can cut multiple items at once - sometimes I have to psyche myself up to LIFT it up, carry it to the sink and rinse. Also, I put little rubber stoppers on the bottom four corners to keep it from moving around - I found it would rotate if something didn't keep it in place. My wife thinks it looks too big, but if you cook as much as I do, you want a larger work surface. If not, you might consider something smaller for ease of use, and cleaning.
