Book Description

To Protect & Serve
The Courage Series, Book 1

To save others' lives, they will risk their own...

Houston firefighter, Jeff Taylor is a fireman's fireman. He's not afraid of anything, and no situation is too dangerous to keep him on the sideline if lives are at stake.

Lisa Matheson runs a semi-successful ad agency that's on the brink of falling apart. Her employees are incompetent and her schedule has become exhausting. When she takes on a client with a brilliant idea for a big conference, she thinks that maybe, finally this is her lucky break. However, the fire station wasn't what she had in mind for finding conference speakers. When she falls for a handsome but shy firefighter, it's possible that life might just be going her way for a change. The only problem is she can't control Jeff and the death wish he seems to have...

"Staci Stallings writes Christian romance of the purest and sweetest kind!"

*~* Excerpt *~*

It was like a whole sleeping system snapped awake around Lisa. People she had no idea where they had come from were suddenly running in every direction at once.

“Sorry, Ms. Matheson, we’re going to have to do this some other time,” Captain Hayes said, but she was too stunned to do more than nod.

Men, gear, boots, equipment, and then just as the truck roared to life, the last fireman in full gear flashed by her and jumped into the back door. All the air vanished from the earth itself when he slammed that door closed. The blaring continued above her, but she hardly heard it as her eyes blurred against the sight. Slowly the truck pulled out into the street, leaving her standing alone in the empty station house.

“Oh, God, please, let him be all right.”

5.0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC! May 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Wow, another fabulous story by Staci Stallings! Staci has a true talent for keeping the reader totally engrossed in her story, because her stories are always true to life, and her characters are people just like you and me. This is an awesome story about trust, something all of us struggle with in everyday life! Trust in yourself, trust in other people in your life, and most importantly, trust in the Good Lord!! It is an awesome love story that gives us all hope that with God in our lives, we can make those hard decisions and trust that God will take care of us. Another must read by Staci!!

5.0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER WINNER BY STACI STALLINGS!!! May 20, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I love Staci Stalling's books!!! As usaual, when reading one by her, I lose a lot of sleep. As an author myself, I don't get much time to read much anymore, so I usually lay in bed and read 30 minutes to an hour right before going to sleep. Well, many a night while reading, To Protect & Serve, I thought... just one chapter, I'll read just one more tonight. Then pretty soon it was... okay, just one more. Before I knew it, it was one or two in the morning and five or six chapters later because, To Protect & Serve, is that captivating!

I won't go into the details of the story as others have already done that, but I will tell you, however, that this is more than a fabulous romance story. The lessons in this novel were mind-blowing and fantastic! Especially the one about stepping out of the boat, and the one about taking one step at a time. If you want to know what I'm talking about, you'll have to purchase the book. You won't be sorry you did, because Staci Stallings is a very gifted and talented writer. Her style is fresh and unique and very enrapturing. With each one of her stories, I'm taken away to another world, a world I want to be a part of and never leave. Her characters are real with real every day problems. I love that.

Oh, and the firemen in this story, they're smokin' hot! Especialy the hero!!!

Can't wait to get my hands on more books by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read! Awesome! Fantastic! May 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is another great read by Staci Stallings! Staci works magic in her ability to weave a story that keeps you interested from page one. You can always be certain that her stories will be inspiring as well as entertaining. There is romance of the purest and sweetest kind. There is enough suspense to keep you up late at night because you can't put the book down until you see what happens next. And, then there is always that important ingredient that makes her books special. She shows how we need to quit going through life on our own power and learn to trust that God will hold us up. If I could, I would give this book 10 stars! Truly an extraordinary book that I will read more than once and will recommended to everyone I see.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, but concerned about two things November 28, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is the first review of a book I've written, so bear with me. I did enjoy the book, but I do believe it was a little over-dramatic in that the characters were so unbelievably stubborn and hard-headed. There was some repetition as some of the other reviews have stated. Lisa, in particular, was in such denial of her feelings toward Jeff that it just seemed a little unreal.

However--my two biggest issues were the drinking and the swearing. In a "Contemporary Christian" book, I would not expect to find the two characters meeting in a bar, even if neither really wanted to be there. Then later in the story, Jeff is offered a beer by his buddy, Dustin, and we assume he takes and drinks it...even the brand name was in the book. If this was a story about an alcoholic overcoming his addiction, I would understand the usage, but this was more like "social drinking." In addition, both characters say "D--- it" one time each in the book. EXTREMELY disappointing. I understand anyone can swear when under extreme pressure (or not), but did that really have to be printed in the book? They couldn't have said "Darn it" or "Shoot" or Rats"?

Please don't misunderstand me. I don't want to judge anyone if you drink or swear or anything else. That is not my place. However, Christians are called to be holy as Jesus is holy and we are to be set apart from the world. Except for the section others have mentioned where Lisa is listening to a preacher on the radio talk about stepping out of the boat and keeping your eyes on God, God doesn't play a major role in this book (besides being called upon when people are in trouble or are very worried).

3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but rather superficial... December 8, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This was the first Staci Stallings novel I've purchased. It was okay, but no real depth to the story... Probably won't be buying any more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome! May 15, 2012
By Cindy
Format:Kindle Edition
Owner of her own successful company, self sufficient, no emotional ties, Lisa's life is safe. She's worked hard to get here and that's the way she wants it.
Jeff's life has been all about fulfilling his destiny by becoming a firefighter. He's met his goal, found good friends and is now settling into his new job. He's worked hard to get here and this is the way he wants it.
To Protect and Serve is Lisa's story. Afraid to put her emotions on the line or risk her heart being broken, she pours herself into her fledgling advertising company only to find that her life still lacks meaning and purpose. The more control she gains over her life and work, the more stressful things become for her. Shouldn't it work the other way around?
To Protect and Serve is also the story of Jeff. Allowing the past to make demands on his future, Jeff searches to fill the void in his heart by becoming a firefighter. Putting his life at risk to save others is an everyday occurrence. He is good at what he does and feels a sense of accomplishment in it. Why then, does the emptiness inside him only seem to grow, gripping his mind in a search to fill it with something as yet unknown?
What happens when these two lives heading entirely different directions collide one night, sending their motivations and ambitions hurtling into places they have never dared to venture before now? Can Lisa allow her heart to run free long enough to see where it takes her? Will Jeff let his job succeed in extinguishing the spark that threatens to catch his emotions on fire? Can they find faith along the way?
As you have come to expect from Staci Stallings, emotions run rampant through her characters, expertly captured into the written word.
