5.0 out of 5 stars Down to earth and easy to digest, July 14, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: How To Protect Your Family in the Year 2000 Millennium Crisis (Paperback)
Ms. Towle has done an excellent job of stating things simply, and without ANY fear mongering that so many people are hyped up on doing. Even if the worst does happen, Carole Joy has given practical advice to ensure that life goes on without too many hitches. I sent a copy to my friend in Japan, as I thought in a land where she doesn't have a huge support system or any family to rely on she could prepare as best she could. It was a welcome gift!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for planning your Y2K preparations, July 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: How To Protect Your Family in the Year 2000 Millennium Crisis (Paperback)
I found this book to be quite delightful. The author has a sweet sense of humor that helps put this issue in perspective. She does not "ram it down your throat" but allows you to use common sense as you consider the possible implications of this issue.

It's an excellent resource for making your Y2K preparations. The checklists at the end are perfect for anyone who plans to be prepared come Jan 1, 2000.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has dependents, either children or pets.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent advice without a "doomsday" outlook!, July 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: How To Protect Your Family in the Year 2000 Millennium Crisis (Paperback)
Lots of good suggestions and advice, especially for those of us who don't think very much is going to happen on January 1, 2000. I have revised much of my thinking on the issue though as a result of reading this book, and will start to make SOME preparations. I like CarolJoy's attitude of "if I am never going to use something like a generator again, I am not going to buy one now", and that if nothing happens on January 1, then think of it as an adventure with the family in preparedness. Thanks CarolJoy for making the Y2K Crisis seem to be a manageable event, not catastrophic!! I'll go get a camp stove and fuel tomorrow!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the book we've all been waiting for!, July 10, 1999
This review is from: How To Protect Your Family in the Year 2000 Millennium Crisis (Paperback)
What really struck me about this book is its marriage between completeness, practicality, and simplicity. Whether you believe the millennium is going to be a crisis or not, it provides a handy reference for family preparation in general. Ecological disasters seem to be occurring with greater and greater frequency in every geographical area of the continent, and indeed, the world. This book is not alarmist, but gives practical advice on what we should be thinking about and what we should have on hand in case of any emergency.

For example, we all know that one of the basics to provide for is water. In the "Water" chapter, we are given options for providing drinking water for our family. (I didn't realize there were options other than bottled water!) It describes different ways to purify water, how to recycle it, conserve it, and collect sources of water for purposes other than drinking.

The food chapter is also very informative. Thank goodness there are ways to enhance and enliven canned and dehydrated food. It provides excellent examples of these, but also some foods you've never thought about that have a long shelf life.

Other issues addressed include:

- Responding to the call of nature and personal hygiene (something none of us want to think about, but we all need to know)

- Keeping warm.

- Preparing your house.

- Warding off cabin fever.

- First aid and medical issues (with a great first-aid kit checklist).

- Preparing on a shoestring budget.

- Recommended resources. (This chapter provides checklists, organizations, books and tapes, and the author's home phone number and E-mail if you have any questions! Wow!)

I'm really thrilled with this book. I bought a bunch and gave them to my friends, family, and associates. They all loved it. The most common comment I get back is: It's so practical, easy to read, and easy to access information. Thank you for this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical advice provides parents with peace-of-mind!, July 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: How To Protect Your Family in the Year 2000 Millennium Crisis (Paperback)
Reading this book was a pleasure! The thoughtful, practical advice was very well presented. I most appreciated the way the author didn't sensationalize or raise any undue panic about the pending Y2K situation ... just common-sense, down-to-earth suggestions on what to do as a parent to be sure that your family is reasonably prepared to cope in the event of any serious problems which might arise. I would highly recommend that this book be in every home.
