Book Description

At the start of her senior year at Kingsbrook College, a small school in Northern Michigan, Ariya Adams has a perfectly normal existence. Determined to make this her best year yet, she attends her classes and hangs out with the friends she has come to love more than life.

That is until the arrival of the sexy and mysterious transfer student James Rymer, who captivates her affections almost instantly. With her emotions on the fritz for no apparent reason, and unsure if he shares her feelings, Ariya finds herself on an emotional rollercoaster in which everything she knows and loves is questioned.

When fantasy and reality mix, Ariya’s world is turned upside down and she learns that “normal” isn’t what she thought it was. Danger soon comes for her and she discovers that everyone has been keeping secrets from her. The battle between one’s duty and what feels right will have to be fought and it may be a struggle for Ariya to stay alive. When Ariya’s life and the lives of the people she cares for most are endangered, she learns to never underestimate the power of blood.

Protected is a New-Adult, Paranormal Romance. It is the first book in the Ariya Adams trilogy.

This is the first book in the Ariya Adams Trilogy.

Anna Applegate really recreated that feeling of college life. It's been almost 20 years since undergrad but this book took me back. I really connected with the main character too, Ariya Adams. What's up with all the hot guys though -- loved it and can't wait to find out more about them (James and Nick) as well as Caroline (best friend).

In Ariya's world, vampires are good and werewolves are crazy and bad. There are hints to other types of supernatural beings, but nothing concrete is revealed. Plus, there are "plot thickening" revelations throughout the book. It makes you anxious for the next book of the series.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. When I read this book it made me feel the same as when I read Chloe Neill's Chicagoland Vampire series which I love. I'm not saying its a copy cat of her books but the flavor and writing style are similar to me. If you enjoy that series, I think you'll enjoy this one as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars I have fallen in love with this series! December 16, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Ok, normally when I write a review for books that make up a series, I usually read the first book, write my review, read the next one and write the review for that one and so on. But with this series, I just COULDN’T STOP! I finished the first one and was so caught up in the story of these wonderful characters that there was no way for me to stop and write the review. I rushed right into my kindle store and 1-clicked the second book as quick as possible and dove right back into the story and characters that I had fallen in love with. If you are tired of the typical story plot of paranormal series and the predictability that goes along with it, then this series is for you! This adventure will leave you on pins and needles through every twist and turn. You will be flipping pages as fast as possible to find out where the words are leading these wonderful characters.
So let’s start with a rundown of the main characters. Our heroine in the series is Ariya Adams. She’s your typical normal college student who has had her fair share of horrible college relationships. When we start out, she is taking a break from all guys, at least as far as being in a relationship with them. Enter James Rymer, the dark mysterious and, let us not forget, HOT new transfer student on campus. He brings out new emotions in Ariya that she’s definitely not use to. But not only are the main characters in the story absolutely wonderful, you can’t help but love the supporting characters as well. There’s Ariya’s best girlfriend, Caroline, the spunky fun loving fashonista. Riley, the hot guy best friend, who has a secret crush on Ariya and would do anything for her. And Nick, Caroline’s hot “new” boyfriend, who soon becomes a close friend to Ariya as well.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the best. December 1, 2013
By Payten
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm going to be honest here, this was not one of my favorite reads. I saw this book and it looked good. I loved the description and was excited to read it.
I read the first few chapters and decided it was alright. I kept going and going, hoping for more detail. But no. It was boring at best. The characters were flat and I couldn't connect with any of them. I thought Ariya had promise, but she flatlined when she started seeming more like a sophomore in high school than a senior in college.
The book did not pick up at all either, when the bathroom scene happened with Devon I got excited because that's what I had been waiting for, but then her memory was gone and the story got boring again.
And what was with her reaction to when she finds out her friends were vampires? That was the worst part. I'm sorry, but you need to think about this a little more. I know that this is fiction, but COME ON. How would she only be mad that they didnt tell her? Or not freak out almost at all?
I found myself skipping parts just hoping that I would get more action, but nope. After she found out her friends were vampires, I stopped reading, I was so annoyed with the book. It might have gotten better, but I don't think I could read anymore to find out.
I'm sorry if I'm being blunt and harsh, but this is my true opinion of the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad. I'd recommend to younger readers.... December 1, 2013

This book wasn't bad but I am an older YA book lover so it was a bit weak for me. I know the main girl is supposed to be in college and 21 (I think) but it felt like a young teen's life. I gave 3 stars because I finished it. I don't really care to read the next one and wouldn't recommend to anyone over 20....just my opinion

4.0 out of 5 stars Starts slow but give it time, it's a good story! November 14, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I received this book in exchange for an honest review by the Author and the “Lovers of Paranormal” Group on

I thought the story started a little too slow and too many things were repeated over and over. However, once I got further into the book the story started flowing nicely.

The story is about vampires and werewolves but it was more focused on the characters and their personalities and not about them being vampires. I like the characters and the "feel" of their personalities and they developed.

The book starts slow but give it time and you will enjoy it!

3.0 out of 5 stars 3.5 Stars :) July 2, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
While reading this book, I believe that I became more confused as the story went along. There were some aspects of it, which I knew I had figured out right away, but then others I still don't understand completely what had happened. This book was a bit slow to begin with, and I couldn't really get into the story until about halfway through.

The characters that were written, although they were older (all adults) they also had that teenager sense about them? I don't really know how to word that properly, they all seemed to have a sense of immaturity about them. Especially seeing as how some of them were OLDER.

I almost felt like Ariya's character, because she was as confused as me when it came to what was happening to her. James's character, although he was hot according to his description, he also seemed like a character that was just there.

With this being Anna's first novel, I think she did really well on working out the story and the characters. It could have been better, but writing is one of those you grow as you learn. I do look forward to reading what she has in the future, because she left the story with a bit of a cliffhanger.

3.5 Stars from me.
