Book Description

From New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Cynthia Brint:

Farra's life is in shambles. She's lost her parents, lost her job and she's about to lose her apartment. So when Grault, the sharp featured dark-eyed stranger who shows up on her doorstep in the middle of the night, informs her she just inherited a house from a grandmother she never knew, she thinks her prayers are answered.
Little does ordinary Farra know that her grandmother was a witch and her house was really a hotel for strange, ethereal creatures. Headstrong and practical, she dives in and runs the place her own way -- much to the concern of Grault, who knows that secrets breed in the very shadows of the living, breathing house. With his own secrets to hide, can he protect this stubborn, beautiful, frustrating human that he's falling in love with?

Protected by Stone is 295 pages of whimsical, urban fantasy mixed up in the shadowy embrace of steamy romance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really good! January 11, 2014
By ~Cerys
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I loved how the story started with this one! It follows a lot of the familiar themes of the contemporary fantasy stories that I love to read, but it takes on a nice romance aspect along with it, too. It kind of reminded me of a grown up version of Harry Potter in some ways, but not as horrible a beginning?

One of the things I liked the most is that while there's paranormal fantasy aspects throughout the story, it's very easy to relate to Farra. Everyone's dealt with hard times in their life at one point or another and I think a lot of people have kind of hoped for a magical solution to their problems. For Farra, this actually ends up happening, and in a more magical way than a lot of people expect.

The whole story took on a different kind of lens for me because of that. It made it more easy to believe in many ways, like this sort of thing could actually happen somewhere and that magic is hiding just around the corner, waiting for us to find it. The romance aspects were really fun when put inside of that, too. Grault starts off a little gruff and austere, but I liked how him and Farra grew a lot closer as she grew accustomed to everything in this strange new world she's entered.

If you want a more new adult take on the popular young adult fantasy novels that are out there, this is definitely the story for you. I found it really refreshing and a ton of fun to read. I'd highly recommend you check it out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Magic December 24, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Gargoyles and lake monsters and witches and ghosts and Bigfoot and space aliens (OK no space aliens or Bigfoot). I was not prepared for this book when I read the blurb. I will say that it was an unexpected pleasure to read – that feeling of being sucked into a new world just hidden from view was amazing.

Miss Blooms and Grault (and it really is cute that he refers to her as Miss while they’re busy falling in love – It was almost like “Howards’s End in the Phantom Zone” – made for a really sweet love story.

It wasn’t until after I finished this book that I realized that Cynthia Brint wrote “Until the Flood”, which was a werewolf book I really loved. So now I only have one more Brint book to read, so she better start writing more ASAP!

5.0 out of 5 stars When different works out really well December 23, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The holidays have left me with some extra time to read. This book turned out to be very different than I expected but I kept on reading and enjoyed it. Farra is stomach punched by life, so when she stands to inherit her grandmother's house she thinks things will change. She wasn't searching for ghosts and spirits but she inherited a house full of them. I really enjoyed this book.

Funny, sweet, and full of some amazing moments that had me flipping the pages (no spoilers, but the scene with the lake was just perfect). Protected by Stone kept me curious about what would happen next. Farra is clever and just the right amount of cynical, while darkly-handsome Grault proves to be more than the cold, stoic guy he starts out as. They make a great pair, and it was satisfying to see them triumph over the 'big bad' of the book, but even more so, to work through their personal troubles and grow closer. It'll make you laugh, but it'll also make you grab some tissues. The book ties up most everything neatly, leaving some things to be explained in a (hopeful) sequel.

3.0 out of 5 stars unsettling January 19, 2014

I love how the story unfolded with their feelings for each other coming together. But, the ending was very sad as to their future together. Happy endings are good, open endings not so good.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK January 7, 2014
By Jamie C
Format:Kindle Edition
Farra Blooms is down on her luck and all in one day looses her job and her apartment.
In the middle of the night Grault shows up and explains to her that her grandmother left her to be the caretaker of her home since she has passed. Having nothing else Farra decides to go to the house. While she is there she learns that her grandmother had magic and that living in the house is many ghosts and creatures.
Not knowing how to do magic she takes things into her own hands and decides to do things the way she knows how to and slowly cleans up the house. When she realizes that something from the lake is after her Grault ends up protecting her and they fall in love with each other.

I absolutely loved this book it kept me interested the entire way through and i read it all in one day. If you love magic and ghosts then this book is for you!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid as stone January 2, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This might be my favorite paranormal romance of 2013, and it was a total surprise, sneaking in under the wire while I stole some time for myself over the holidays. It's a sweet tale of a normal girl in decidedly abnormal circumstances, and it inhabits a charmingly surreal place where the everyday meets the otherworldly. Grault is an interesting and stony fellow who behaves like a proper gentleman, but I think Farra's resilience and sincerity sneaks into his heart unexpectedly. And the guests, well, you'll have to read the book to meet them yourself, but suffice it to say that they're fascinating. Top that off with a satisfying ending (which I won't spoil) and you've got one hell of a good book here.

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice story with developed characters August 4, 2014
By Allison
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Interesting. Spoiler alert: I kept expecting it to turn around, as the main character spent much of the book trying to learn how to do magic like her relative who left her the house. But the book was a triumph because the main character actually made the "house job" work by regular means. The character grew. The romance was late starting and kind of "by the way" but it was well done. I enjoyed the book.
