Matt Thomas' writing is very pratical, easy to follow and understand, and can be made quite fun. These are great exercises to help anyone through a number of dangerous possibilities that we don't like to think about, from fires to deeealing with strangers. I highly recommend this book to anyone with kids.

I have had martial arts training for more than forty-five years. I've lived in gang country. I pride myself that I've never needed to harm another human being. I strongly support this kind of play-teaching for children. I think my own early experiences would have been better if I had had some.

That said, I think the sources that the authors draw on are far from the best. Rather, find a Judo or Brazilian Ju Jitsu teacher who has a good rapport with children. Avoid the schools that feature a "WORLD CHAMPION" and favor the schools where the children are playful, not sullen or violent. Try reading Tom Brown's Tracker together and maybe his urban survival book. Play more the baseball together.

Finally, establish a password and teach them to question authority that asks them to do themselves or their personal sovereignty harm.

Remember, NEVER go to the second scene of the crime. What happens to you there on the street, in public, even it you die, is less bad than what will happen to you at the second scene of the crime. I don't recall this being mentioned in this book.
