Book Description

Protecting What's His (A Line of Duty Novel) by Tessa Bailey
She’s running from the law, and the law wants her bad.

The opportunity was just too damn delicious for Ginger Peet to pass up. The purse full of money she finds—$50,000 to be exact—could give her and her teen sister the new start they need. So she grabs the cash, her gothy sibling, and their life-sized statue of Dolly Parton, and blows outta Nashville in a cloud of dust. Chicago, here we come...

Turns out, Chicago has some pretty hot cops. Hot, intense, naughty-lookin’ cops like Derek Tyler, who looks like he could eat a girl up and leave her begging for more. And more. Tempting as he is, getting involved with the sexy homicide lieutenant next door poses a teensy problem for a gal who’s on the lam. But one thing is certain—Derek’s onto her, and he wants more than just a taste.

And as far as he’s concerned, possession is nine-tenths of the law.

5.0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT! Plus a hero to lust over! February 28, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
5 brilliant, hot alpha stars

This book was brilliant! There is nothing I love more than a super possessive, crazy in love hot alpha man! Derek is that and more! Good lord I loved that hunk! It isn't easy to write a perfect possessive alpha, but it was dont perfectly here. He is the definition of alpha male. He sees what, er...who, he wants and he doesn't mess....he gets. And he protects, gah...makes me all swoonie just thinking about all that is Derek!

Ginger was perfect as well, she appears to be super confident and very aware of her sexuality but in reality she is a scared and terrified girl. She's had to survive and protect her sister for so long she lacks the confidence that she can and is still doing one hell of a job. She knows how to wear her mask, that's for sure. It was beautiful to watch her (with Derek's help) realize just how amazing she is. No doormat here, even with her lack of confidence and basically fear of failing. Nope. She isn't afraid to speak her mind, stand her ground, and be as stubborn as a buil. Loved it!

I normally HATE short books, I usually lack the ability to connect to the characters, and in the end feel like I'm missing something. Although, I don't ever know what that something is. Lol. Not the case here. The author has one hell of a talent. She was able to make a 150-ish page book FEEL like a full page book. You easy connect to, love and crave those characters, and most FEEL their love and story. Nothing felt forced or rushed, it was just....perfect. The only ing i could even say negatively about this book is that i didn't want it to end. Lol. Looking forward to more from this author!

4.0 out of 5 stars Eagerly waiting for more from this author February 27, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I love an alpha hero who falls for the heroine and is jealous, protective, and faithful. But even with those great heroes, I don't like stories that skip the development of the relationship and just assume lust/love and go right into the physical relationship. Likewise I can't deal with the simplistic stories that are so common these days that "tell" the reader what is happening through a skimpy framework of a plot with dialogue without the necessary details and story to SHOW the reader what is happening.

That is why I really enjoyed this story from a new author. She knows how to write a real story with an excellent hero and a good heroine. This story is reminiscent of another of my favorite authors, Lynda Chance, but it feels longer and more developed. I can't wait for another book by her!

ETA: I forgot to point out that I'm usually pretty critical about grammatical issues, and I do not recall any major problems with this work. The fact that i didn't note anything in particular is really unusual these days.

2.0 out of 5 stars Thumbs down April 1, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
So...I didn't like it. And I can't even say "it's not for me" because look at the cover, read the synopsis. Protecting What's His sounds like the perfect book for me, it has romance, sexy scenes, a alpha officer (Who can resist that!), a runaway girl taking care of her sister (an emotional and touching story), and some crime action. I was so excited to start this book but in the end, it just didn't work for me. I'm not disappointed with the story, I'm more frustrated that I didn't connect with any single character. That has never happened before. I felt like watching a movie that didn't make sense.

Ginger moved to Chicago with her sister Willa to get away from her mother and her distorted drugs and alcohol induced lifestyle. Ginger has always been the caretaker of her sister and when she sees an opportunity in form for her mother passed out with 50k in her purse, she grabs the money and leaves Nashville in order to give Willa a better life. Ginger is through and through southern, she calls everyone sugar or honey and fights back when needed. I had a hard time connecting with Ginger because I didn't agree or understood her actions when it came to Derek, her hot lieutenant neighbor. I just didn't get the insta-lust and don't even get me started on the romance thing. I didn't buy that at all. Derek is a dominant partner and extremely commanding to the point where it was unbelievable and awkward. I've read about a lot of dominating men and loved them, but Derek is weird. The things that come out of his mouth are not sexy, they sound trashy and out of place. I cringed everytime he opened his mouth. And his relation with Ginger was just for sex. He wasn't good to her and even if her tried, he sounded fake to me. So, bottom line, my reason for not liking this book was Derek.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable story 3.5*** March 28, 2013

Finally a romance book without a cliffhanger ending or a heroine who is wimpy. This was a sweet short story and I was wishing it was a bit longer as I enjoyed the interaction between the main characters in this book being Derek, Ginger, Willa and Evan. Derek was certainly an alpha male, but not over the top unlike some other books. Ginger was independent and stood up for herself and those she loved - good to see a stronger female lead for a change. Overall an enjoyable read and I would try another book from this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars too dang short! February 27, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
ok, despite the title of my review, this was a complete story, but it was so good i wanted more. if you like a possessive H, you will like this. if you don't like that, or crude talk in the throes, just move along and buy something else. no cheating, no 'continued-next-book' gosh, not a zillionaire in the book! but the characters were pretty well drawn, the circumstances real enough and the sex scenes fit the story. (c'mon, a lieutenant giving the detectives a night off?)
