Dramatic, adventerous, empowering,
By S. Robinson (Providence, RI) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Protectors of Klairn: Book One of the Klairn Series (Paperback)
Erin Elder's "Protectors of Klairn" is an empowering, visual journey that I highly recommend for all ages. There is the budding (and very authentically uncomfortable) romance between the heroine Iona and Lexti, the drama of the eco-trails where plants and animals communicate to help or hinder, and the beautifully described world of Klairn itself, a montage of stunning vistas. The young Iona Stonefinder is at a crossroads in her young life; duty and loyalty to family versus following her heart and setting off on her own chosen path. She is not quite certain of her fate, but shows the courage needed to proceed towards her goal. The Protector Trails are the backdrop of a fast moving plot concerning Iona's discovery of the limits of her strength, will, trust and determination. It also tells the story of her emergence into womanhood. I found Portectors of Klairn to be a refreshing tale of intelligence, kindness and wit (instead of explosions) being used to solve and overcome problems. I found the telling of her story spirited, and wished that I had book two in my hands when I had finished. Thank you Erin!

Hooked on the First Sentence,

Communing with nature and awareness of self for fortitude are portrayed in PROTECTORS OF KLAIRN. I enjoyed the focus on tenacity and endurance for gain. In the midst of these challenges Erin writes with an undestanding and gentle spirit. Her focus on self-control in the midst of trial in a fiction setting make it easier to explore the necessity of this high achievement. I was hooked by the first sentence. by Stephanie S. Wonderfully done!,

This review is from: Protectors of Klairn: Book One of the Klairn Series (Paperback)
The planet of Klairn had a war-torn and industrial past that made it necessary to create an elite team of people who would seek to maintain the well-being of their planet. They were called The Protectors. Each of the twelve provinces held grueling Olympic-like trials. The winner became the Protector of their province. The contestants must be strong of mind, body, and will to earn the coveted post. Iona Stonefinder entered the trials against the wishes of her parents. Iona desired nothing more than to earn the title of Protector. Among all the other contestants, Lexti Anders would be the toughest. Iona was greatly attracted to him, however, she could not be sure that he felt the same of her. His attention could very well be a way to distract her so she would make an error and lose. ***** This book is a delight! Everything that is alive can think and make its thoughts known! Imagine wanting to climb a tree, but you must first, somehow, communicate with it for permission. Without it, the tree would beat you with its branches! All plants and animals on Klairn are this way! This first book follows the trials of the Arvendril Province. I am told the next book may begin the first mission. Espionage is often required on missions and Iona is no good in that area of skill, Lexti is though! I found myself sucked into Erin Elder's magical world and laughing aloud at several sections. I have no doubt that we will be seeing more from this author in the future! Highly recommended reading! *****

Protectors of Klairn, by Erin Elders was innovative and refreshing. She paints a picture of a world that lives and breathes and you feel like you are right there with Iona, the main character. Even through the last pages, the story kept me going. I heartily reccomend this for science fiction and fantasy lovers of all ages. I can't wait to read the next one.

Lively and imaginative. This book kept my attention to the end. With a strong flavor of Xanth and Hary Potter rolled into one, this book is a very enjoyable read for teenagers and adults alike.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the first of what I hope to be more of Ms. Elder's works. The vivid descriptions of the breathtaking scenery made it easy to visualize such a beautiful planet, and to mentally place myself there. The characters were easy to identify with and care about, and the story line was easy to follow without being simplistic. I strongly recommend this book to my adult friends, as well as to the young adult students that I teach.

My teens and I love this adventure! It's empowering and fun. My young teens can't put it down and talk about wanting to be Iona (the lead). This is great reading if your kids are a bit too mature for Harry Potter, as my 12 year old absolutely loves this story and can't wait for the sequel. I appreciate the author writing about strong, smart and sensible young women going after their dreams dispite obstacles. It's exactly what our young teens need today. Thank you, Erin Elder!
