Book Description

September 1, 1997 0570049938 978-0570049937
This book consists of a series of statements from men and women dating between 1501 to 1559. These statements illustrate the ideas, beliefs, and somtimes the fates, of the people who had come to share a profound discontent with the church as it then existed and a positive determination to change it. Writings include: Erasmus and Hutten the humanists, Luther and Melanchthon, Zwingli, Sattler the Anabaptist, Servetus the Unitarian, Calvin the theologian and lawgiver, and the English reformers, a special breed -- from the rabble-rousing Fish to Cromwell the administrator, Starkey the moderate, the King and the Archbishop of Canterbury. Spitz provides historical and theological context for each document and a reading list for further exploration.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Tour Through Turbulent Times, May 25, 2004
By
This review is from: The Protestant Reformation (Paperback)
Lewis Spitz provides an accessible and accurate introduction to the Reformation in this suprisingly complete but easy-to-read book. In it he distills his lifetime of research into this period, providing the reader, both seasoned scholar and rank beginner, with a helpful overview of the persons and events of the half century he describes. His sections on the Continental Reformation shine particularly brightly. Although almost twenty years old now, it remains pre-eminent in its field. Its age means that it does not take into account more recent scholarship, but it still provides a tour de force when it comes to examining this turbulent period.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good info but sometimes dry, June 24, 2001
This review is from: The Protestant Reformation (Paperback)
Spitz has collected the works of several important people in the reformation such as Luther, Calvin, and others. I find this information to be important to have on your shelf for reference, especially if you are a member of a protestant faith. The pieces are kept in their original words for the most part and so (because of the time difference) can be difficult to get through. It's short and worth the read. It contains Luther's 95 Theses and some prominent writings of John Calvin.
