Book Description

March 1, 1999
The term "Protestant spirituality is sometimes considered to be an oxymoron. Spirituality has traditionally been seen as the domain of the Catholic faith, and not of the Protestant Reformation and its offshoots. That perspective is in error, as Dr. Joseph Driskill demonstrates in Protestant Spiritual Exercises, a book that introduces readers to the spirituality that evolved from Calvin, Luther, and many other Reformers.

This book, geared for use by seminary students and clergy and lay leaders within Protestant congregations, helps readers discover their rich spiritual heritage through an examination of its history and practice and the theological affirmations that undergird it. For use either as a textbook for training future clergy, or within the congregation itself to further develop the spiritual life of the parish, this book is practical on many levels. Actual practices (the Prayer of Examen, Luther's Four-Stranded Garland and others) can be used in spiritual formation of individuals and groups. Driskill also helps leaders learn how to use the exercises, making them aware of gender and age issues, the role of the setting in which the exercises are used, and good leadership skills.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Book on Spirituality, April 6, 2006

This review is from: Protestant Spiritual Exercises: Theology, History, and Practice (Paperback)
Joe Driskill's Protestant Spiritual Exercises is a stunning book. (I know, it's not a scintillating title or book cover, but be patient!) I have coached, consulted with and lead retreats for hundreds of mainline Protestant pastors in effective spiritual leadership over the last decade. Driskill's insight into the church and prayer is profound. The book is so real it feels simple to read. Usually people who see the church with Driskill's prophetic eye are in so much pain they are angry. Driskill's voice has no ugly edge. At moments, I felt as if I were hearing the voice of the Spirit. I would use this book with pastors, elders, and lay people beginning to pray. In an evangelism book I just finished (Unbinding the Gospel: Real Life Evangelism, Chalice, Jan. 2007), I recommend two books on prayer: this one and Richard Foster's Prayer: Finding the Heart's True Home.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful!, June 24, 2003
This review is from: Protestant Spiritual Exercises: Theology, History, and Practice (Paperback)
This book was very helpful to me. It gave me a larger perspective of the historical development of spiritual disciplines from a Protestant vantage point. I underlined it throughout and wrote all over the margins. This book would be a great resource for those who lead spiritual retreats.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reading for EVERY Protestant reader!, July 31, 2000
This review is from: Protestant Spiritual Exercises: Theology, History, and Practice (Paperback)
Great reading for every serious Protestant reader - be it Mainline or Evangelical. I would have to say that this is a "must" reader for any serious liturgist, worship leader, or spiritual leader. His real-life examples are great and a big help in understanding the ways of Mainline Protestants and Evangelical Protestants.
