The Safespot is really easy to use and is sturdily built and secure.

It is designed to prevent the random person walking by and taking your dog, but do not expect the equivalent of a Kryptonite type bike lock.

Nearly every day when I walk my dog, I make a few stops along the way.

I really like the Safespot leash in that it completely quells my insecurity of leaving my dog tied on the sidewalk when I have to go into a store that doesn't allow dogs. I actually have never, in the 5 years that I have had her, left her tied outside. Now I do it with no problem. The Safespot is really easy to use and is sturdily built and secure. I do not use it as her primary leash, as I use a harness and prefer to not have anything that can constrict her neck. That being said, it is actually very easy walking her home with the Safespot after I am done with my errands. It is light weight and has a really good feel. I bring it along in a bag when I know that I will have to go into a store and leave her outside. The handle side clasp, that locks around a stationary object, is narrow enough to thread through a small U-Lock that are often attached to storefront gates. It is also adjustable and fits around wide lamp posts. The leash is functionally shorter than a standard 6 foot leash, but for good reason, as it restricts her moving into the street if I have no choice but to attach the Safespot near the gutter. I want to clip a note to the collars of any dog that I see a dog left tied outside without a Safespot stating, "Too many dog are abducted because of owner negligence that can be remedied by using a Safespot leash!"

I live in a city and recently adopted a goldendoodle. Everyone loves her - perhaps a little too much. Dog theft is common where I live. With this locking leash, I can walk to the grocery store or go to a cafe and be sure that she will still be outside the store when I come out. The collar and leash both are completely adjustable, so it will continue to work as she grows. She doesn't mind wearing it either. I wish the lock was by a code rather than a key, since I worry about losing the keys. But it comes with two keys, so hopefully I won't lose both! The leash is a bit heavy, so I walk my dog on her regular leash and then put the Safespot on when I reach my destination.

I live in San Francisco. There are more dogs on my block then there are people in many counties of Nevada. Nearly every day when I walk my dog, I make a few stops along the way. Most stores are OK with you bringing your dog with you when you browse. For establishments selling food, it's illegal so you tie your dog outside. The big question is will she be there when you come out of the store?

I tried to fabricate a locking leash but did not get too far. I looked on-line a few years ago and found nothing. I decided to look again a few weeks ago and found this product. It is fantastic. I use it nearly every day. The design is well thought out and quite practical.

On the downside, this is not really that secure. Someone with a wire clippers could easily cut through the reinforcing wire and take the dog. But at least it does keep the honest people honest.

I saw one suggestion in another review. It would be nice to have another model with a combination lock or other key-less mechanisms. It is a bit of a pain locking and unlocking with a key. Hey, nothing is perfect.

I kind of want to order a second though and see if I can get through the leash with a pocket knife.

There is definitely a steel cable running through the middle of a cloth leash, but it seems to me that any serrated blade will probably be able to saw through it in a minute or so.

That said it will definitely deter casual thieves which is kind of the point behind dead bolts and things of this nature anyway.
