Book Description

Definitive Guides to the X Window System July 8, 1992

Volume 0, X Protocol Reference Manual describes the X Network Protocol, which underlies all software for Version 11 of the X Window System. This fourth edition is updated for R6 and can be used with any release of X. Contents are divided into three parts:

  • Part One provides a conceptual introduction to the X Protocol. It describes the role of the server and client and demonstrates the network transactions that take place during a minimal client session.
  • Part Two contains an extensive set of reference pages for each protocol request and event. It is a reformatted and reorganized version of the X Consortium's Protocol specification. All material from the original document is present in this manual, and the material in the reference pages is reorganized to provide easier access. Each protocol request or event is treated as a separate, alphabetized reference page. Reference pages include the encoding of requests and replies.
  • Part Three consists of several appendices describing particular parts of the X Protocol, along with several reference aids. Note: This fourth edition does not contain the Inter-Client Communication Conventions Manual (ICCCM) or the X Logical Font Description Convention (XLFD). This material will be included in an upcoming O'Reilly book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you always wanted to know about X..., May 14, 2000
This review is from: X Protocol Reference Manual : Volume Zero for X11, Release 6 (Definitive Guide to X (Paperback)
This book reveals X at its most raw: the underlying bytestream that is truly X. If you've been confused by GUI toolkits and widgets galore, this book will strip away everything that isn't part of the core concepts that you need to know to understand what happens during an X session.

This book is not for the faint of heart, however. If you're wondering about learning how to write an X application, this book is probably not for you. This book is a good reference for implementors of X servers and X libraries; it may also be of some use to advanced X application programmers that need a reference for debugging purposes.

5.0 out of 5 stars What makes X tick, February 8, 2008
This review is from: X Protocol Reference Manual : Volume Zero for X11, Release 6 (Definitive Guide to X (Paperback)
This is a great book. I am using the knowledge gleaned from this book to manage windows for a product platform using Java to talk directly to the XServer via the protocol. I knew almost nothing about X but had great deal of experience with other UI Toolkits. Within a few months I had a deeper and more satisfying understanding of X and its capabilities. Not for the faint of heart, but perfect for the inquisitive programmer...
