HURDY GURDY HEADS UNITE!!!, October 14, 2005
No seriously, I had never listened to this band until I saw them open for Garmarna at the Nordic Roots Festival (the hurdy gurdy/fiddle player in Garmarna is also in Hurdy Gurdy). Well, I was blown away! These two guys playing old hurdy gurdys wired to effects, and jamming to a techno rythm section on their Mac, were amazing. The music is both haunting and powerfull. If you are into Scandinavian music, techno rythms, or just excellent musicianship you should check this out. I have NEVER left a review for something, but could not leave this CD unreviewed. I look forward to more from them (and the new Garmarna coming out in 2006)... Hurdy Gurdy Heads of the world unite!!!

Cool, Crisp, Compelling, November 11, 2005
Stefan Brisland-Ferner (Garmarna) and Hållbus Totte Mattsson (Hedningarna) have come together to create a cool, crisp, and compelling collection of tunes featuring that eerie, ethereal "medieval synth", the hurdy gurdy. Most of the tracks are traditional, but a few are originals. The duo take that ancient instrument and stretch its possibilities to the limit, layering texture upon texture.
Standout tracks are Delirium, Frost Mats, Tök Jons, and Galgen, with most everything else being atleast interesting, if not somewhat similar in style throughout. The production is scrunchy and cold, but this only reflects the moods and atmospheres of the countryside of the artists themselves and the music being created.
All in all, it is a rather good album, and if they make another (and all indications point to that end), the only suggestion I would make is take those cool experimental tracks and infuse them with more hooks and beats.

Prototyp by Hurdy-Gurdy, January 11, 2009
This group is... different, to say the least. They use sound bytes from the medieval instrument, The Hurdy-Gurdy, aka Crank Fiddle, aka I-could-never-play-one. This album is all instrumental, and has the ability to put you in a trance like state. This is not an in-the-car album. Before purchasing, look at their last-fm, or check the song "Delirium" out on playlist.com. I love this album, but I seriously doubt they'll make another. Their Myspace page hasn't been logged on to since 2007, and the music they have is a niche-ish style. You can't do much for a follow-up, unless the throw in a vocalist or percussion. Hell, give is an Apocalyptica setup, and then maybe you can have a follow up. But over all, this album is unique and deserves attention from those who enjoy trance music and light techno.
