5.0 out of 5 stars Prototype February 14, 2011
Platform for Display:Xbox 360| Edition:Platinum Hits|Verified Purchase
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Prototype is a sandbox game in which the player takes on the role of Alex Mercer, who has been infected by a virus and now seeks to gain the answers to his questions by any means necessary. Although the story is not exactly amazing, it's made more interesting in how the player learns it through fragmented memories. The replay ability of this game is amazing and the freedom that the player receives is simply exhilarating. The powers are fun and entertaining, especially being able to take the form of a grandma then running up the side of sky scraper and jumping off of it to elbow slam a confused enemy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Action Packed!!! October 2, 2010
Platform for Display:Xbox 360|Edition:Platinum Hits
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I am an average gamer. Mostly play the "popular" games like Halo 3 (all of them), Gears of War (1&2) CoD games, condemned (1&2), Ninja Gaiden 2, etc And honestly this game is the most fun I have had on my 360!!! Some games have a better story like BIoSHOCK, and most have prettier graphics BUt no other game delivers hundreds of screaming innocent people while monsters are running around after them while the military is shooting them down while you are fighting some 20 or so bad guys!!!

Some people claim it has no story but you have over a hundred little 10 second videos you obtain along the way that give you clues about whats going on. They are important if you really want to know the story.

Some other people complain about the lack of variety. You get different powers, high jack helicopters and tanks, you can throw around cars like friesbies!! Plus you have alot side missions that really mix it up and actually add hours of fun.

The game isnt perfect but the little problems it has are easily overlooked. If you like SLOW paced games and enjoying scenery this is probably not for you. I bought it because I wanted a game where I could just get on a kill stuff for an hour straight and this pretty much fit the bill. Took me about 17 hrs to finish and I only did like half the side missions

2.0 out of 5 stars Loose controls mar an otherwise great idea for a game November 17, 2012

Oh, what could have been. Prototype was was obviously a home-run swing for Activision. The idea for the game had tons of potential, the plot was fresh and the game play was going to be innovative. Unfortunately, due to an uneven difficulty spike and the worst controls I have used in recent memory, this game is ultimately a strike out.

The game centers around you, Alex Mercer, as a military experiment gone wrong who can morph his body into weapons. Think the terminator 2 villain but flesh blades and hammers instead of metal. Alex is trying to unravel the events that led up to his change since he has no memory of what happened until he woke up in a morgue. That's the gist of the back story, which isn't all that bad, it's just lacks some depth. But this isn't a plot review, it's all about the game play.

You begin with crazy powers like the ability to run up buildings, jump over entire city blocks and glide from rooftop to rooftop. All of Alex's abilities can be upgraded, allowing you to run faster, dash in mid air, and gain extra health. The problem is you will immediately feel like Alex controls like a Ferrari driven by a 12 year old. He makes wild turns if even the slightest flick of the joystick is made and it's very hard to plot where you want to land. Granted, with the right trigger held, you still continually run though streets and buildings with ease, but if it takes you twice as long to get where you're going, then who cares? The game also makes a huge difficulty spike about 10 missions in. Soon you get surrounded by tanks, helicopters firing machine guns, and tons of monsters/military who make your life miserable. There's not a whole lot you can do, as these people seem to be able to track you no matter where you go.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not All That Fun December 22, 2011
Platform for Display:Xbox 360| Edition:Platinum Hits|Verified Purchase
Fun: 2.0 out of 5 stars
It's been a while since I've played this game at this point, but overall I did not enjoy the game. It had decent graphics and art, but at the end of the day it just wasn't fun for me. It felt repeditive. It lacked depth in its storyline. And I had zero attachment to the characters. It could be that I just don't like the style of the game as opposed to the game itself, but either way - I traded it in.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great game! January 11, 2012

I happened to play this game at a friend's house instead of my typical FPS games, and I'm glad I did.

This is not to be missed... it's like Resident Evil meets Grand Theft Auto.

The gameplay is very entertaining, it last a good long time, and it's not so compelling that you'll be late to work as a result of playing it. That makes for a great game in my book.

Don't pass on this one at under $30!

4.0 out of 5 stars Prototype? I barely know her! October 25, 2011
By Greg
Platform for Display:Xbox 360|Edition:Platinum Hits
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Prototype (excuse me, [PROTOTYPE]) is a bit of a mixed bag that, for all its faults and foibles, works far more than it doesn't. The end result is something that feels a bit unfinished, a bit unpolished, and more of a dry run (in the same way that the first Assassin's Creed turned out to be); almost as if the developers stopped and said "That's all well and good, but... let's make sure it works before we spend TOO much time and money on it." Which is an approach that's bound to create at least a few flaws: an open city that feels a bit sparse, flat, and untextured, enemies that feel repetitive, lightly varied side quests, unimaginative story and uninspired voice acting... you know, a small grocery list of things that just all feel unfinished or rough around the edges.

Oh, and thank goodness someone finally had the guts to stand up, take a risk, and make a video game protagonist who's a twenty to thirty something thin, handsome, white, American male who's super smart and/or strong! ...Look, I don't want to dwell on this and I know that's your target audience, but come on, seriously? Would it have been a worse game about someone who can run up buildings and change their hands into blades if they'd messed with that formula even in the slightest? Sigh...

Anyway.

It's strange I should be complaining about your main character since he is by far what works best in the game. Alex Mercer IS the [PROTOTYPE] (a man with super powers from a super virus and super plot-convenient amnesia out for REVENGE... or something!) and his super human running, jumping, gliding, smashing, killing, throwing, and maiming is a blast. It happens intuitively and with surprising ease.
