The concept for this game sounds awesome: go anywhere and do anything with crazy mutant super powers, battling the army and crazy beasts. And for the first hour or so it is really fun, learning all the combos, running around the city causing chaos.
The story for the game is kind of interesting, but a lot of the story is spread throughout these small video clips that you have to discover, after awhile my patients gets the better of me and I lose interest. The city that the game is set in is very large and very BORING. Every building and structure look the same, and the missions are set very far apart, so you feel like your character is running on a treadmill for a couple of minutes to get to the next mission. The gameplay is ok. You unlock many different weapon arms that enable different combos and attack styles, this is pretty cool in concept; in the game I tried the 5 different weapon arms, but ended up play 90% of the game with just one of them. Sometimes when fighting enemies your character doesn't feel as powerful as he should be. The missions are mostly the same, go somewhere, kill lots of stuff, leave. Overall, I was disappointed in this game. While playing I was actually wishing it was shorter so I could get over it faster (once I start a game I'm determined to finish it). There are other games that offer a similar style, and are a lot more fun.

Prototype is a sandbox game in which the player takes on the role of Alex Mercer, who has been infected by a virus and now seeks to gain the answers to his questions by any means necessary. Although the story is not exactly amazing, it's made more interesting in how the player learns it through fragmented memories. The replay ability of this game is amazing and the freedom that the player receives is simply exhilarating. The powers are fun and entertaining, especially being able to take the form of a grandma then running up the side of sky scraper and jumping off of it to elbow slam a confused enemy.

I am an average gamer. Mostly play the "popular" games like Halo 3 (all of them), Gears of War (1&2) CoD games, condemned (1&2), Ninja Gaiden 2, etc And honestly this game is the most fun I have had on my 360!!! Some games have a better story like BIoSHOCK, and most have prettier graphics BUt no other game delivers hundreds of screaming innocent people while monsters are running around after them while the military is shooting them down while you are fighting some 20 or so bad guys!!!
Some people claim it has no story but you have over a hundred little 10 second videos you obtain along the way that give you clues about whats going on. They are important if you really want to know the story. Some other people complain about the lack of variety. You get different powers, high jack helicopters and tanks, you can throw around cars like friesbies!! Plus you have alot side missions that really mix it up and actually add hours of fun. The game isnt perfect but the little problems it has are easily overlooked. If you like SLOW paced games and enjoying scenery this is probably not for you. I bought it because I wanted a game where I could just get on a kill stuff for an hour straight and this pretty much fit the bill. Took me about 17 hrs to finish and I only did like half the side missions

I happened to play this game at a friend's house instead of my typical FPS games, and I'm glad I did. This is not to be missed... it's like Resident Evil meets Grand Theft Auto. The gameplay is very entertaining, it last a good long time, and it's not so compelling that you'll be late to work as a result of playing it. That makes for a great game in my book. Don't pass on this one at under $30!

It's been a while since I've played this game at this point, but overall I did not enjoy the game. It had decent graphics and art, but at the end of the day it just wasn't fun for me. It felt repeditive. It lacked depth in its storyline. And I had zero attachment to the characters. It could be that I just don't like the style of the game as opposed to the game itself, but either way - I traded it in.

Prototype (excuse me, [PROTOTYPE]) is a bit of a mixed bag that, for all its faults and foibles, works far more than it doesn't. The end result is something that feels a bit unfinished, a bit unpolished, and more of a dry run (in the same way that the first Assassin's Creed turned out to be); almost as if the developers stopped and said "That's all well and good, but... let's make sure it works before we spend TOO much time and money on it." Which is an approach that's bound to create at least a few flaws: an open city that feels a bit sparse, flat, and untextured, enemies that feel repetitive, lightly varied side quests, unimaginative story and uninspired voice acting... you know, a small grocery list of things that just all feel unfinished or rough around the edges.Oh, and thank goodness someone finally had the guts to stand up, take a risk, and make a video game protagonist who's a twenty to thirty something thin, handsome, white, American male who's super smart and/or strong! ...Look, I don't want to dwell on this and I know that's your target audience, but come on, seriously? Would it have been a worse game about someone who can run up buildings and change their hands into blades if they'd messed with that formula even in the slightest? Sigh... Anyway. It's strange I should be complaining about your main character since he is by far what works best in the game. Alex Mercer IS the [PROTOTYPE] (a man with super powers from a super virus and super plot-convenient amnesia out for REVENGE... or something!) and his super human running, jumping, gliding, smashing, killing, throwing, and maiming is a blast. It happens intuitively and with surprising ease. I was nervous at first when I saw just how many different things Alex could do (mostly violent things) but the wheel that switches between powers, the hot keys, even the (touchy) targeting system were all pretty easy to grasp making for some smooth, effective slaughter. With a little practice you can become an extremely efficient fighter, able to dismantle some soldiers and tanks, cause some mayhem, escape around a few buildings and shapeshift to go back into hiding in a really fluid and enjoyable way. There's enough variety in fighting styles and enough stealth options to keep things interesting for longer than if this were a simple button masher and the destruction you bring is incredibly satisfying. There's also a really clever sort of "bullet-time" effect that happens when targeting or switching powers or charging attacks that slows things down enough to give you (the player) a few precious seconds to plan your next move. It's incredibly clever and effective, if you can get the hang of it. I half-mentioned the under-budgeted feeling; the plus side of it is that the game feels very lean, trimmed of fat, and designed to JUST KEEP MOVING! The mission objectives are simplistic and straight-forward, the events are chaotic and colorful and the enemies JUST KEEP COMING. Alex is fluid, he's living mercury, can recover from just about anything and is at his best when on the go. Hit and run, hit and run, run and run, just RUN! The game world has been stripped of the unnecessary (it's almost entirely glitch-free) and left room for lots and lots of chaos to ensue. And that chaos quickly becomes your best friend: pitting the army against the infected while the civilians get mashed in the middle gives you time to complete your objectives and then run and hide before getting overrun by your surprisingly determined and effective enemies. Oh, and about those civilians... I've gone on at length already, but I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the poor humans trapped in the middle. The prototype world is an incredibly amoral world and your hero, Alex Mercer, is not a hero at all. He's not even an anti-hero. He's... just sort of a jerk. And it's not just him: every character we meet is at least a little tainted and out for their own ends. There are no 'morality' choices involved and no punishment at all for picking up a hapless civilian just walking down the street and ripping them to pieces. Even Grand Theft Auto has police and the army to come around and make a token effort of trying to stop you. Most games at least acknowledge that you're being bad when you're being bad. Not so in Prototype - it's never even menteioned. The city is little more than Alex's playground and the people in it are his toys. And you WILL slaughter them, you can't avoid it; believe me, I tried. You'll need to absorb them for energy, you can't always pick them out from the infected they're being attacked by, and they have a strange habit of running right in front of your tank while you're racing the clock. The game makes it very clear that 'normal' people are of no concern to you, not even in the slightest. It's a really... interesting feeling and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't enjoying it. Like, a lot. But it's something to be mentioned. Like lambs to the slaughter, as they say...

Prototype for Xbox 360
I was anxious to play this game due to all the positive reviews regarding the gameplay. The main character is able to consume any characters in the game, evolve new powers, and essentially karate chop helicopters or slide tanks in half with the blade ability. Well, it turns out the first half of the game was extremely frustrating due to the horrible controls. Once I got used to the button layouts, controlling the character became somewhat of a full time job. Alex never goes exactly where I want him to go as he skids around endlessly trying to pick up a simple object or a person to consume. The consumption process takes forever, making it almost useless for boss battles. If you want an idea of how bad the controls are, take a few minutes to study the gamepad layout in the instruction manual. It's actually quite "simple" once you identify the root/core controls but they could have made it simpler. The number of powers is misleading. There are only a few useful powers, but many of the bosses have abilities to deflect these powers, requiring you to use the same strategy over and over and over again. Case in point: the Elizabeth Greene boss and the final boss. I threw my controller after dying twelve times trying to kill the last millimeter of life from the final boss. This game is just absolutely frustrating on a ludicrous level. Besides the gameplay, the plot doesn't make any sense. The mysterious character you're talking to in the present time (there's an in media res style story telling somewhere in the game) gives you hints and tips, but once you find out who he is at the end, it doesn't make any sense whatsoever why he helped you in this way. It got to the point I didn't care for the horrible voice acting, the horrible cut scene animations, and I Just skipped everything. The parkour movements are kind of cool initially, but the controls just detract from the overall gaming experience. The guitar hero button mashing to disable the detectors also got stupid after the first few times. I have no interest in the events because the upgraded powers aren't very useful. Every time I try to do a devastator, the military is firing rockets at me. Any commander worth half a brain would see the bigger threat is a huge monster the size of Madison Square garden, and not a 6' tall humanoid wearing a leather jacket and a hoodie - so why are they firing rockets at the main character as he is taking down the monster? This game could have been great, but it seemed like they just tried to make it Grand Theft Auto meets Godfather meets Sci-Fi, with too much ambition and not enough fun factor. Overall: 2/5 stars for fun, 3/5 stars overall.

All I can say is wooooow!! action packed. chaos, hectic, forces u to really concentrate about ur objective. u cant just go in like rambo and expect to get it accomplished cuz the strike teams will take u out. its a lot of buttons and the controls have a slight learning curve, but once u get the hang of it, and you can control your character pretty precisely, you can pull some pretty awesome stuff and get'er done! its not hard, and not easy either. playing on normal and ive had died quite a lot. but the good part is that they dont put you way back and frustrate you. the start just about where u left off. plus, you can save ur progress at ANY given point in the game. so if u tried 100 times to achieve something, but it doesnt give u a check point for it, just save the game right at that moment and u wont loose it. bought this for my 8 yr old son. he played for like one weekend and loved it, but then he stopped playing it and never picked it up again. he does that with all his video games tho. he gets bored with em real quick, all expect smackdown. he can play that game all day and all nite. so just because i didnt feel like playing my other games, decided to give prototype a try, sittin up there on the shelf at the very bottom of the stack of games. lol glad i gave it a try. 5 stars all the way! great game. tons of fun.

I don't say this often, but this is officially my #1 favorite game.
Controls feel so natural and the power-ups are just so fun. Slashing up a group of "infected" civilians is just so satisfying. Story isn't half bad. You are just some dude figuring out why everything in NYC is happening. Perfect game for running around doing whatever you want. Prototype = Super-Hero simulator.

This game was shipped to me (I used the 9 day deal since it is free) and it was great. I got the game shipped right on time. There was no damages, in perfect condition. The game itself was awesome, game efects and play brilliant itself. Story line isn't the most original but in it's own way yes it is. Buy this game and you won't regret.
